Governments talk a lot about balancing the fiscal budget, but what about a carbon budget. Well, Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner is bringing forward a private members bill later this week that will demand of the Ontario government that they adhere to an annual carbon budget as a way to attack global climate change. His plan, Schreiner says, will cut Ontario’s climate pollution in half by 2030 and get the province to net-zero by 2045. There wasn’t much news coming out of last month’s Federal Election, but history was made locally up the road in the riding of Kitchener Centre. That district is the home of Mike Morrice, the first candidate from the Green Party of Canada to be elected to the House of Commons from Ontario. Perhaps predictably, the archaeological consultants working with the City of Guelph crews to excavate the Baker Street Parking lot announced that they exhumed bone fragments from a lost grave. This is not the first time that remains have been found in the Baker Street area over the years, but this time the City is trying to carefully find them all before the redevelopment of the area can begin this coming spring. It should be a force of habit by now, but Guelph General Hospital is joining the list of places where you will have to show proof vaccination if you want to pop by. Starting on November 9, the Hospital will be initiating a proof of vaccination requirement for many of the people visiting the hospital in what their management is calling an additional step to ensure the health and safety of staff and patients. After a couple of weeks of pressure from restaurateurs and other business owners about the Government of Ontario’s seemingly random removal of capacity limits on cinemas and sports venues, it looks like all limits are coming to an end by the mid-point of next month. In a typical late Friday announcement, Premier Doug Ford said that more limits will be lifted on Monday with an eye to end all COVID-19 precautions by the end of March. This month’s business will cover the always controversial audit planning reprots, as well as customer service needs at the City, a new bylaw for trailers, and some pressing 2022 election matters. In the first meeting of Guelph Police Services Board since Homecoming, the Board decided that it would be the last Homecoming without the City of Guelph getting any compensation for the added security costs. On Wednesday, the residents of Guelph reached an important vaccine milestone: 9 out of every 10 eligible people in the city have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. By comparison, only 83 per cent of people born in 2009 and before in the whole of Ontario are fully vaccinated, which casts Guelph as pretty enthusiastically vaccinated locality in Canada.
