Gordon Tells Open Sources He Hopes Council Buys New Climate Action Plan

Last week, most political concerns locally were about the council decision on the 2022-2023 budget. While council was debating, Ward 2 Councillor James Gordon was appearing on CFRU’s Open Sources Guelph through the power of pre-recording an interview in advance, and while he did talk about the budget, he was just as interested in talking about a personal political initiative of his own: the Race to Zero action on climate change. Schreiner Re-Introduces Private Members Legislation

It seems like only yesterday (but it was actually February 2019) when Guelph MPP and Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner introduced his first private members bill. The Paris Galt Moraine Conservation Act made it past second reading, but when Premier Doug Ford prorogued the legislature this past summer, all bills in the works were cancelled. Ford and Schreiner Fight Over Highway #413 in Duelling Announcements

In an announcement in Caledon on Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford lent his support, and that of the Government of Ontario, to the Highway #413 project. The controversial project needs all the friends it can get, because environmentalists, local municipalities, and all provincial opposition parties have lined up against #413, and one of those opponents, Guelph MPP Mike Schriener, was also in Caledon Wednesday for an announcement of his own. Schreiner Announces Private Members Bill to Create Carbon Budget Accountability

Governments talk a lot about balancing the fiscal budget, but what about a carbon budget. Well, Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner is bringing forward a private members bill later this week that will demand of the Ontario government that they adhere to an annual carbon budget as a way to attack global climate change. His plan, Schreiner says, will cut Ontario’s climate pollution in half by 2030 and get the province to net-zero by 2045. Levenson Tells Open Sources that Even the Greens Just Aren’t Green Enough

Is there any room left of the Green Party on environmental policy? Karen Levenson sure thinks so, and she’s running for the Animal Protection Party to prove it. Bowman Acclaimed as the Federal Green Party Candidate for Guelph

Politicos from coast to coast to coast are anticipating an election call that might come any day now, so local riding associations need to get their candidates lined up and ready to go. The Guelph Green Party have selected their candidate for the coming Federal Election, and it’s environmental scientist Dr. Michelle Bowman who says that she’s eager to give people a reason to vote Green. Horwath Comes to Guelph in Campaign-Style Announcement

In a campaign-style announcement on Thursday morning, Official Opposition leader Andrea Horwath landed in Guelph with a couple of her NDP colleagues to talk about her party’s plan to promote the use of electric vehicles. The setting, next to some EV charging stations, was not subtle, and neither was the political message. We’ve heard a lot about the City of Guelph’s intention to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. That is the corporate goal of the City of Guelph, and while it’s a laudible, City Hall doesn’t generate power. So isn’t there a key partner they need to bring on board to reach net zero by 2050? Longfield Says Government is Ready to Move Forward After Supreme Court Decision

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that the Federal government can impose a price on carbon. The 6-3 decision was released on Thursday morning, and effectively ends a joint appeal by the Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan governments of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, aka: the Carbon Tax. Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield hopes this means the whole country can now move forward on climate action.
