Council set up and knocked down plans for economic development over the next four years, plans to manage growth for the next 30 years, and plans for moving people around town for that same time horizon. For the fourth time in less than two months, there’s a new COVID-19 outbreak in the Guelph General Hospital. Even though there was an outbreak cancelled just five days ago on Friday, and the another outbreak was expected to be ended later this week, it looks like COVID-19 is not finished with the hospital yet. Tuesday was the first day of the month, and since the month is February that means it’s also the first day of Black History Month. First thing in the morning on Tuesday, representatives from Guelph Black Heritage Society were joined by Mayor Cam Guthrie, other local politicians, and about 50 spectators to see the black, red and gold colours of the African Nova Scotian flag raised above Wilson Street. Ontario businesses locked down for the last three-and-a-half weeks were finally allowed to re-open up to 50 per cent capacity on Monday, so problem solved, right? Not so fast, says Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner. Joined by Dufferin-Caledon Green Party candidate Laura Campbell, who owns a restaurant in downtown Orangeville, Schreiner said that there’s still a role for government to play as businesses try and get back on their feet. This time last week news broke that there was another COVID-19 outbreak at Guelph General Hospital, it was the first one of 2022, but it was not, as it turned out, the last. Earlier this week, the Hospital announced that they had a second, separate outbreak on a different floor, but on this Friday there’s at least some good news in that the Hospital is back to having just one outbreak. The anticipated re-opening of the Ontario economy is Monday, and there have been some last-minute details released from both the Provincial government and the local public health unit. Locally, a public health order issued in December will be rescinded on Monday, and there have been some adjustments to the re-opening protocols from the Province while all levels are sending out a message that COVID is something we have to get used to.
