In the last Committee of the Whole meeting of this term, there will be a variety of different reports to chew on from a surprising development with council’s regular schedule next term to a slate of new motions from the mayor to fight issues around mental health and homelessness. Delayed one year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff from Wellington County and the Guelph-Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination presented the results from the latest Point in Time Count on Wednesday. Conducted over two days last October, the Point in Time Count gives the community a snap shot of homelessness in our area, and despite the challenges of the pandemic, the count is heading in the right direction. You may have heard there’s a housing crisis. Sky-high costs, especially in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, are making it harder and harder for all but the richest of the rich to be able to get the housing they need. This seems like a problem that the government could help solve. Almost 24 hours after Toronto Police rousted a homeless encampment in Trinity Bellwoods Party in Toronto, Green Party of Ontario leader and Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner revealed his party’s housing strategy. The goals of the plan focus on creating more affordable housing, more support for people experiencing homelessness, and additional funding to create more sustainable communities. Fighting homelessness, and creating affordable housing, has been a fairly dominant topic for the last several years, and a lot of progress has been made lately in Guelph. Perhaps that success is what drew the attention of the Prime Minister of Canada as today, Justin Trudeau joined Lloyd Longfield and several local community leaders to talk about the efforts being made to eliminate chronic homelessness in the Royal City. At a December council meeting where it was recommended that the City of Guelph sell the property of 65 Delhi Street there was a request among councillors to find a buyer that would use the heritage building for a public good. Mission: accomplished! In a media release on Tuesday, the City said that none other than the County of Wellington wants to buy 65 Delphi, and then turn it into transitional housing. At the August 24 city council meeting, money from the affordable housing reserve was given to the St. Joseph’s Housing Corporation to help complete a project to provide 65 affordable units to seniors. As a delegate at that meeting, the executive director of the Drop In Centre announced that her non-profit was working on a deal of its own for supportive housing, and that became the story. One of the biggest issues with a stay-at-home order is that you have to have a home to stay at. For that reason, the Government of Canada announced last month that they were offering $157.5 million in funding to address the needs of the homeless during the COVID-19 crisis, and the County of Wellington will be getting $720,000 of that money to look after the short-term needs of our area’s most vulnerable.
