The flags at City Hall were ordered lowered to half mast on Friday to honour the late David Birtwistle, a former city councillor, mayoral candidate, and active member of Guelph’s political establishment. Mayor Cam Guthrie in a statement said that Birtwistle “cared deeply” for his community, and that we was an “engaged and active citizen” even after he left formal political life. Municipalities are managing the pandemic well, but they still need help and they shouldn’t have to beg for it. It’s a known fact that Mayor Cam Guthrie got his start in politics as one of the councillors for Ward 4, and on Thursday night he virtually returned to his stomping groups with current Ward 4 Councillors Mike Salisbury and Christiner Billings. Mayor Cam Guthrie called an emergency meeting of city council for Monday at 6 pm to discuss extending the end date for the Downtown Dining District. The district is currently schedule to close on Monday, but an open letter from the people running expanded patio service there threatened immediate job losses if they’re not allowed to continue for a few more weeks. The day after it was announced that Ontario had seen over 300 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day, Premier Doug Ford and members of his cabinet came to the Royal City with some money for a local company looking to shore up any future demands for medical equipment. Linamar, Guelph’s largest corporation, received $2.5 million from the Ontario Together Fund today to help build 10,000 new Ontario-made e700 ventilators. For the eighth year in a row, the City of Guelph has secured a AA+ rating from the Standard & Poors global rating agency. This good economic news comes in the midst of a fiscal year where Guelph has been hit with the negative effects of COVID-19 and the economic problems created by the pandemic, and although Guelph is not alone in these conditions, it seems again we’re doing better than some of the others.
