Every year, students at the University of Guelph mark the anniversary of the terrorist attack at L’École Polytechnique in Montreal with a vigil at the campus’ Albert Thornbrough building, which houses the school of engineering. The memorial hasn’t gotten any easier after 30 years, but the message remains clear: we need to encourage and support women in engineering and other science and technology fields. Members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) across the province took part in a one-day strike to protest an impasse at negotiations with the Government of Ontario. Here in Guelph, over 200 teachers from Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute (GCVI) walked up and down Paisley Street with a simple message: they’re striking for the kids, not for a pay raise. At Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis, they deal with issues of violence against women all year round, but for everyone else, at least one day of year makes us all stop and think about femicide and gender-based violence. It’s the anniversary of the worst mass shooting in Canadian history, and it was all directed at women because the perpetrator, in his own words, was “fighting feminism” when he killed 14 and injured 10 others at L’École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. Although the vote to direct City of Guelph to look at developing the land at 106 Beaumont did not go his way, Ward 2 Councillor Rodrigo Goller has no regrets about his advocacy on the file. This past Thursday on Open Sources Guelph, Goller talked about the hectic last month at council, fighting for housing, and the fight to come at Tuesday’s budget meeting.
