At the meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board on Tuesday, trustees voted unanimously to declare a climate emergency. The motion will create a new climate change committee of the board, which will look for ways to reduce the carbon footprint at Guelph and area public schools, and promote others to lead by example. In a year that saw City of Guelph departments and boards do everything possible to keep their budget increase close to zero, the Guelph Police Service asked for a nearly 10 per cent increase. That accounts for over half of this year’s total tax levy increase, which currently sits at 3.78 per cent, but Guelph’s Police Chief is firm, his service needs those fund and the new people they will secure. At Monday’s city council meeting, the horseshoe will debate a recommendation on expanding transit routes and schedules for the 2020 Guelph Budget, and of particular focus is a new route to the Hanlon Creek Business Park. Some on council are concerned about the expense, but the General Manager of Guelph Transit is firm that recommendation already made is the best direction. Student leaders from a coalition that won a landmark legal challenge against the Provincial government over making certain student fees optional spoke from Queen’s Park on Friday morning.
