The discovery of 215 young Indigenous people buried on the property of the old Kamloops Indian Residential School re-opened a great many old wounds in this country, and just in time for National Indigenous History Month. Guelph Marks Discovery of Mass Grave at B.C. Residential School
The discovery of a mass grave with the remains of 215 children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School has re-opened a national sorrow, and prompted new demands for accountability and reconciliation. Guelph is no exception as key Royal City institutions have lowered their flags to half-staff in recognition of the loss while community activists organize a vigil at Guelph’s most recognizable landmark. Provincial Court Hears Government Appeal of Student Choice Decision
Just because there’s a pandemic to worry about, it doesn’t mean that the Government of Ontario can’t multitask with some old priorities. On Friday, the Ontario Court of Appeal heard the government’s case about why they needed to overturn a lower court’s ruling about the Student Choice Initiative, a policy that separated services at post-secondary schools into essential and non-essential categories. Despite the Pandemic, Guelph and Area Adds 500 More to “Sunshine List”
Despite the economic issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, local Guelph and area governments and agencies added more than 500 more names to the so-called “Sunshine List” in 2020. The yearly disclosure of the government workers in the province making 100,000 or more was boosted largely by medical fields, but the number of employees on the list in almost all agencies went up. Femicide Rates in Canada Hold Steady, According to U of G Office
Every two-and-a-half days in Canada, a woman or girl is killed, and that’s a “persistently stable” rate of murder. That means it hasn’t changed since the University of Guelph’s Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability (CFOJA) started monitoring the situation three years ago. In their third annual report, the CFOJA noted that despite the pandemic, or because of it, femicide rates remain unchanged in our country. Exactly one week from today, it’s the one-year anniversary of the declaration of a state of emergency in Ontario. The days leading up to March 17, 2020 were the first test of our collective mental health, watching the number of COVID cases steadily increase until things started locking down. But the struggles didn’t end last March, and they show no signs of abating this current month even though the end of the pandemic may be near. Public Health Unveils Next Phase of Vaccine Rollout Plan
Many areas of Ontario, including Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, re-opened from the state of emergency on Tuesday. On that same day, Public Health unveiled its plan for a regional vaccine clinics, approved by Ontario’s COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force, that will go into effect once additional vaccine resources become available.
