As scheduled, Guelph City Council returned from summer break, but this September there were a couple of caveats. First, there are renovations underway in the council chambers so the two meetings were 100 per cent virtual once again. Also, these were the only two meetings before the October 24 election, and you might think that there wouldn’t be a lot of action but there were some very big decisions made indeed. It feels like we just got back to council business, and now it’s going back on break! In this second of two meetings for this September, it will be a pretty laid back agenda for the most part, recognizing staff members’ accomplishments, and then we’re talking about wasteful future, which will hopefully result in less waste. The Retail Council of Canada has sent an open letter to Ontario’s Minister of the Environment asking for government help with bans on single use plastic. They apparently like the idea of going with less plastic in our environment, but they’re asking that Ontario government to step in before municipalities in the province get too carried away.
