If nothing else this month, Guelph is now officially a bird city, and we now sleep under the wings of our official bird, the Black-capped Chickadee, which was chosen by popular demand. At least that part went right because this month council had its first serious tech-glitch of these post-pandemic times. Government of Ontario Cap Rent Increases to 2.5 Per Cent in 2023

The bad news is that your rent might be going up, but the good news is that it’s not going to go up as much as it could have. According to the Government of Ontario, the province’s rent increase guideline for 2023 will be set at 2.5 per cent, meaning that’s how much your landlord might be able to raise your rent by without getting approval from the Landlord and Tenant Board, but hey, it could have been 5.3 per cent. GMHI Sells the Last Assets of District Energy to Toronto Green Tech Firm

A long cause of corporate consternation at Guelph City Hall was official resolved on Monday when the shareholder of Guelph Municipal Holdings Inc., aka city council, passed a motion to sell the downtown node of District Energy to Toronto-based Cascara Energy. The move is being considered a victory for corporate oversight and stewardship, while also being held up as an example of the City’s commitment to get to net-zero emissions. University of Guelph Pauses Mask Mandates as of July 1

The number of mandatory masking spaces in Guelph continues to grow smaller, and it will draw considerably smaller again on Canada Day when the University of Guelph ends all its masking mandates. Once delayed by the U of G administration, the masks will be able to finally come off while people are indoors on campus, but it comes with a caveat that masks might need to go back on sometime in the future. Ford Unveils New, Mostly Old, Cabinet

Under appropriately bright blue skies, the new cabinet for the newly re-election Ontario government under Doug Ford was sworn in outside Queen’s Park on Friday. The new 30-member cabinet does contain a few newly elected faces, but it’s mostly made up of tried and true politicians who are returning to the roles and the parts they played at the end of the last session.
