Christmas came early for Ontario municipalities who are still struggling with reduced revenue for their transit systems. At an announcement in Brampton today, Premier Doug Ford and Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney announced phase 4 of Safe Restart Funding specifically geared to public transportation systems in 107 Ontario municipalities for this fiscal year. Closing the door on an especially contentious negotiating period in the long, sad history of contentious negotiations between education workers and the provincial government, the deal between the Government of Ontario and 55,000 education workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees has been ratified. Doug Ford’s promise to not touch the Greenbelt was turned into a hip-hop beat, and it led a couple of hundred people milling about in the Boathouse parking lot over the covered bridge York Road Park. And they kept coming. Guelph joined the province-wide series of protests happening around Ontario this weekend, another loud choir of voices who are against recent changes the Ontario government’s made to planning rules.
