This Week at Council: New Strategic Plan Process Begins, and the 2023 Budget Confirmation

This was a very busy week at city council with three meetings, one of which was a super-long meeting indeed. Obviously, that long meeting concerned the confirmation vote for the 2023 budget, which saw council trying to balance community need with a hopefully smaller tax burden for the public. This balance was also kind of reinforced by another meeting this week, which looked at creating the next Strategic Plan. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the January 25 Meeting?

In this special council meeting, which begins at a special time, Guelph City Council will review the approved 2023 budget, consider some of the potential changes and then reaffirm. At stake is the $508.6 million cost of running the City of Guelph, and there are a lot of considerations for council to sift through before they get to the final vote. Staff Says New Transit Initiatives Are a Success

Last year during the 2022-23 budget process, council approved two new projects to increase transit use. One of the new programs was a multi-tiered affordable bus pass, and the other was a pilot that let kids 12 and under ride transit for free. In two progress reports to council released Friday, City of Guelph staff are enthusiastic about the results of the program and are considering them to so far be a success. This Week at Council: Workshops, Assignments and Planning

Council got back to it’s regularly scheduled workload for this December with four meetings in two days. The councillors filled their minds with the ins and outs of planning and budgeting, and then put some that knowledge to the test with the first official planning meeting of the term.
