Yesterday’s announcement from the Government of Ontario about the latest COVID-19 prevention measures was not the news that anyone wanted to hear. The reaction from Ontario’s opposition parties and various advocacy groups were as unimpressed with the news about a new (semi)lockdown as almost everyone was given the near universally agreement that Premier Doug Ford made a bad call, or at least a late one, on Monday. Lots of Criticism for Ontario’s New Year Pandemic Planning
Yesterday’s announcement from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore outlined the next phase of the pandemic fight: Kids are going back to in-person school next Wednesday, not everyone will be able to be tested now, capacity limits at large indoor settings will be reduced further, and fourth doses are coming to long-term care residents. Not everyone was pleased with the new directions though, or thinks they go far enough. Continue reading “Lots of Criticism for Ontario’s New Year Pandemic Planning”
2022 Election Preview: Pandemic Politics and How Ontarians Will Vote
This is a politics website, and it’s hard to escape the knowledge that an election is coming next year. Actually, there are two elections coming in 2022, but for the purposes of this lengthy analysis piece, we will focus on the first one, the Ontario provincial election. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost four years since Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives were elected, but let’s look back at how this term began, look at where we are now, and then look at what might be coming next… Continue reading “2022 Election Preview: Pandemic Politics and How Ontarians Will Vote”
GUELPH POLITICAST #303 – Christmas With Mike
In less than two weeks, we enter the year 2022, and that’s an election year in Ontario. In the spring, Premier Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives will aim to make a case that they should be re-elected for a second term, but the knives will almost certainly be out for them. But what about the one Green MPP in the legislature? What kind of year will 2022 be for him? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #303 – Christmas With Mike”
Moore Offers “Precautionary Measures”, No Change in Direction (For Now)
In the wake of growing concerns over the Omicron variant, and the increased number of COVID-19 cases, many people thought that Tuesday’s update from Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore was going to make more news than it did. Instead, Moore offered some concern about the stats, but he didn’t really change the game plan for fighting COVID, at least in the short-term. Local Advocates and Politicians Call for Massive Greenbelt Expansion
Since the start of the current term of the Ontario Legislature there’s been a lot of back and forth about the fate of Ontario’s Greenbelt, a tract of protected land that runs through much of the Golden Horseshoe. Sometimes it’s under threat of development, and sometimes the government is talking about expanding it, but now a collective of community groups are pushing for expansion as a matter of urgency. Ontario Now Last Province Standing Without a Childcare Deal
One of the main issues in the recently completed Federal Election was the Liberal government plan to supply the county with $10 per day childcare. During that election, about half the country had still not struck a deal with the the Feds, but as of today, every Canadian province, save one, has achieved affordable childcare. So will Ontario find a way to get to a deal now that everyone else has? Continue reading “Ontario Now Last Province Standing Without a Childcare Deal”
Two Mikes Tell Green AGM That They Can, and Have, Done Politics Differently
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… At the annual general meeting of the local Green Party that was the message presented by the Two Mikes, Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner and Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice. Morrice’s success was one of the bright spots in an otherwise tough election for the Greens, but Schreiner was optimistic and talked about his almost four years as a successful one-man caucus. Schreiner Brings Forward a New Motion to Take on the Housing Crisis
You may have heard there’s a housing crisis. Sky-high costs, especially in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, are making it harder and harder for all but the richest of the rich to be able to get the housing they need. This seems like a problem that the government could help solve. Or if not the government, then someone adjacent to the government like a provincial opposition leader and Member of Provincial Parliament. Continue reading “Schreiner Brings Forward a New Motion to Take on the Housing Crisis”
