A stray comment from Guelph’s Member of Provincial Parliament may be courting some controversy after the Green Federal nomination meeting last weekend. High school students at over 500 high schools across Ontario walked out of their classrooms on Thursday to protest changes made to the provincial education system by the government under Premier Doug Ford, including in Guelph where hundreds rallied on Carden St. and shared stories of how the changes will impact their lives. On Monday, changes to autism funding go in effect in Ontario, and the people that are directly affected, the parents of children with autism, are not pleased. Today at Queen’s Park, Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner unveiled his private member’s bill, the Paris Galt Moraine Conservation Act. Of all the cabinet ministers in the Federal Liberal government to come through Guelph in the last week, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen was the latest on Monday. Stopping at Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington for a lunch time meet-and-greet, Hussen brought a message of support for those working to resettle newcomers in Canada, and specifically the Guelph community. On Thursday, Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau was met by more than 30 staff and students at the University of Guelph’s W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre for a town hall discussion. Morneau’s Royal City visit also included a stop at the YMCA on Woodland Glen Dr, and a roundtable with community leaders at Miijidaa.
