If it’s December, then it’s time for end of the year lists, and what a year it was in the Royal City! We had a not-surprising surprise election, and we had to get ready for two more. Housing was a major issue, but so was the environment, and the year saw a lot of people get back into the habit of protesting. The Dolime Quarry land will become a part of the City of Guelph on January 1, 2022. This announcement comes from Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark who came to Guelph first thing on Monday morning to announce that he’s signing the Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO) that will rezone the quarry once it’s shut down. Before summer break, there were some long hours ahead for Guelph City Council. One special meeting reviewed the findings of the service rationalization report, and another special meeting reviewed the Baker District Urban Master Plan. Guelph City Council tackled a very busy agenda before the summer break. The Committee of the Whole meeting was a marathon affair with topics about trees, the new sign bylaw, and speed limits. The annexation of the Dolime Quarry property in the west end of the city south of Wellington Street took another step closer to joining the City of Guelph on Monday. The Guelph/Eramosa Township Council had one last vote to say that they’re ready to nip and tuck the quarry land, and now the the final move is in the hands of the City of Guelph. The regular meeting of city council comes one week early this month, but it is not the last meeting before usual summer break. Still, this should be a very busy meeting with a couple of controversial projects held over from committee, plus discussion about a couple of reports pulled from information items filed with council. The annexation of the Dolime Quarry property, and is potential future as a residential neighbourhood in Guelph, took a couple of steps forward this week after two public meetings. From the council in Guelph/Eramosa Township to the council at Wellington County, the annexation has moved closer to being a done deal, and, it seems, without much public opposition.
