The school year is almost over, but the planning for next year is now a less opaque thanks to an announcement from Queen’s Park on Friday. Education Minister Stephen Lecce took part in Friday’s press conference where the Government of Ontario laid out how the province’s schools will operate in the fall, and it will have to be multiple choice as school boards must prepare three different plans in case of the circumstances. It was a little over a week ago that Guelph Transit came out and announced that while they were letting more than 10 people ride buses, there were not requiring that everyone on those buses wear a mask. Just 10 days later, based on “updated advice” from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, Transit is now saying that you have to wear a mask to ride the bus, unless you qualify for a couple of exceptions. Friday marked the beginning of Ontario’s Stage 2 economic re-opening in Guelph and other select areas. For area restaurants and bars that means being allowed to serve more than take-out, but only if they have a patio for people to dine al fresco. Because of that condition, and because not everyone has a patio ready to go, the City of Guelph wants to make it easier for people to dine outdoors and set up their ad hoc patios. As certain regions across the province are counting down to the second phase of the economic re-opening, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has asked for one thing from all area businesses opening on Friday: have everyone put a mask on. Under Section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, Dr. Nicola Mercer is insisting that everyone out and about on Friday, and beyond, cover their face for the sake of the public.
