A lack of a space big enough to organize and hold the sale may scuttle the annual event unless an appropriate venue can be found in the very, very near future. Progress on the South End Community Centre looks surprisingly speedy as city council was given an information report last Friday detailing the broad strokes, and some initial designs, for the City of Guelph’s next great recreational and community meeting place. It’s going to have a footprint of 150,000 square feet, and it will cost $59,130,204, but there’s still a lot of work to do before shovels are put in the ground. In April, the City of Guelph and Wellington County revealed their submission for the Federal Government’s Smart City Challenge: the creation of the Canada’s first circular food economy. On an episode of the Guelph Politicast back in April, filmmaker Kalev Jaason talked about his documentary Diverted, and his attempt to prevent large quantities of reusable items left on the curb by students leaving town from ending up in the landfill. His efforts have not been in vein, as 25 different local organizations have become the beneficiaries of the diversion tactics of Jaason and a team of volunteers. If you diligently watch the City Council calendar, or even Politico’s own monthly calendar of events, then you will recall that there was supposed to be a special council meeting this coming Monday. This meeting was supposed to deliver the final report of the Solid Waste Service Review, but as of today, no agenda for the meeting, or a final report, have been delivered.
