Karl Wettstein Offers Some Final Thoughts on Council Career on Open Sources

Tonight, the 2014-18 council meets for the final time before the turnover on December 3. One of the two people that will not be on the new council is Karl Wettstein, and before departing the council chamber one last time, the outgoing Ward 6 councillor stopped by CFRU!

Before calling it a political career, Wettstein stopped by to chat with the Open Sources Guelph gang to talk about his time on council, what experiences he’s taking with him, and what lessons he hopes to leave behind. That’s in the back half of the show though, for the first half we talk about the latest troubles in the White House and Queen’s Park.

This week, Open Sources Guelph is awash in galling behaviour. In the United States, the President decided to skip the opportunity to remember veterans so he could pout and rage tweet in his hotel room, and in Ontario’s capital building you still never know who might be a scandal waiting to happen. It’s a bummer to be sure, and one that’s compounded this week as we say goodbye to a regular guest as he retires from the political stage.

Listen to O’Rourke’s First Sit Down Interview with Open Sources!

The new city council, which, admittedly, is mostly the old city council, will take their seats around the horseshoe in just a few weeks. As the two new councillors get ready to take up their positions, one of them came by CFRU last Thursday for the first of what will likely be many little chats.

On the last edition of Open Sources Guelph, we were joined in studio by Dominique O’Rourke, the incoming City Councillor for Ward 6. O’Rourke talked about her decisive victory, her plans as a councillor, and how she intends to balance all the prioritites – hers and the City’s – in her first few months of office.

Guelph’s Rona Spared as Lowe’s Shutters 31 Stores in Canada

More tough times for the big box retail market today as the home improvement giant Lowe’s announced that they were closing 31 locations – including 27 Rona stores – in Canada by the end of February. Election Follow-Up Discussion on Open Sources

The big man will come up in a tertiary way on today’s show, but he will not be our focus. Instead, we’ll be looking at the fallout of the Municipal Election race here in Guelph and other places, the ongoing controversy over the apparent murder of a journalist in Turkey, the lack of controversy from Canada legalizing pot, and we’ll look ahead to the next election.
