Nine Guelph Seniors Groups Get Federal Funds for Pandemic Programs

Everyone knows that the pandemic’s hit hardest among seniors; not only are they afflicted with the same feelings of loneliness and isolation like all of us have been during quarantine, but for months they had to be doubly cautious as the age group most afflicted by the ravages of COVID-19. Feds and Province Make Money Available For Community Centre Renos

It was April Fool’s Day, but the announcement was no joke. The Federal and Provincial governments teamed up on Thursday to make $6 million in funding available for three local community centres in Guelph and Wellington County. To reduce the impacts of COVID, create job growth and invest in the future, HOPE House, YMCA of Three Rivers in Guelph, and the Elora Community Centre are getting some help with renovations. Longfield Says Government is Ready to Move Forward After Supreme Court Decision

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that the Federal government can impose a price on carbon. The 6-3 decision was released on Thursday morning, and effectively ends a joint appeal by the Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan governments of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, aka: the Carbon Tax. Social Media Use Can Have Negative Physical Effects, StatsCan

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the effects of social media use, and anecdotally, things have not been good. Most people are talking about the spread of conspiracy theories, election lies, and medical misinformation, but what about the physical effects of spending too much time on social media? Federal Minister Hears Concerns from Local Seniors

Times have been tough for seniors over the last year. COVID-19 has hit them especially hard, and even now with the vaccine rollout and some signs of recovery, the burden of this pandemic is still disproportionately falling on them. Seniors have a lot of concerns, so who better to hear them than Canada’s Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte, who took part in a virtual roundtable discussion with Guelph seniors’ groups Wednesday. Bill Blair Talks to Local Leaders About Gun Law Impact

In the midst of dealing with all things COVID, the Federal government is also in the process of working on new gun control legislation that they hope will have an impact on the various crimes involving firearms. Longfield Announces $76,000 in New Funding for Black Heritage Society

The weekend marks the end of February, which also means the end of Black Heritage Month. Marking the occasion, Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield announced two new grants for the Guelph Black Heritage Society, money that will help GBHS improve their Heritage Hall headquarters on Essex Street, and other funds that will help the group expand their virtual programming. Federal Government Announces New Permanent Funding for Transit… in 2026

People aren’t using public transit the way they once did thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Federal government isn’t planning for transit this year, but transit in the years to come. An announcement this morning with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna promised $14.9 billion in new transit funding for the next eight years, but we’re not going see most of that till 2026. Economic Development Minister Meets with Guelph Businesses

Businesses of all shapes and sizes are struggling because of the pandemic, and doubly so now that it’s clear that were into a second wave of COVID-19. Small businesses especially need the extra help, and there are a number of government programs designed to give them a hand.
