Tuesday was the first day of the month, and since the month is February that means it’s also the first day of Black History Month. First thing in the morning on Tuesday, representatives from Guelph Black Heritage Society were joined by Mayor Cam Guthrie, other local politicians, and about 50 spectators to see the black, red and gold colours of the African Nova Scotian flag raised above Wilson Street. Longfield Announces $76,000 in New Funding for Black Heritage Society
The weekend marks the end of February, which also means the end of Black Heritage Month. Marking the occasion, Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield announced two new grants for the Guelph Black Heritage Society, money that will help GBHS improve their Heritage Hall headquarters on Essex Street, and other funds that will help the group expand their virtual programming. Graffiti Abounds! Guelph Black Heritage Hall Vandalized, But So is Nazi Monument (?) in Oakville
So, there are Nazi monuments in Ontario? You might have never found that out if someone hadn’t vandalized the “Monument to the Glory of the UPA” in the St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery in Oakville before Friday. This is the latest instance of racist, or colonialist, monuments and statues to be challenged or vandalized since protests for social justice started after the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis in May, but this one has a twist.
