Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner presented a petition in the Ontario Legislature today that asks for the Provincial government to take steps to protect Ontario’s water from exploitation by private businesses. There’s presently a moratorium for issuing new water taking permits in the province, but 3,500 signatories on the petition are asking Queen’s Park to do better. February was the cruelest month if you’re a fan of leash-free dog park facilities in Guelph. City Council began the month by cancelling a previously approved plan for fenced-in, leash-free dog facilities in area parks, and ended the month by swiftly undoing that move. The only real item on the agenda at Monday’s council meeting is whether or not the City of Guelph will proceed with its current plan for leash-free, fenced-in dog park facilities. An impromptu decision at Committee of the Whole earlier this month put the dog parks on the chopping block, but dog park supporters have rallied and they’re looking to undo the Committee’s decision. The members of the Large Urban Mayor’s Caucus of Ontario met again on Friday. With special guests Health Minister Christine Elliott and Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark, the LUMCO mayors heard about the Province’s response to the coronavirus, and then they offered a list of things that they would like to see in the upcoming provincial budget. Nearly 200,000 teachers in 72 school boards spent their Friday on the picket line instead of in the classroom, effectively shutting down nearly 5,000 schools in Ontario, and keeping nearly two million students at home. It was the biggest job action by Ontario teachers since 1997, and it was a further escalation in the labour face-off between teachers and the Government of Ontario that seems unlikely to end any time soon. Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, made a stop at the University of Guelph on Friday to hear from researchers on matters of agriculture and establishing better internet connectivity in rural areas. According to Monsef, the U of G might have a big role to play to as the Federal government is looking for places to make investments.
