Burnett Tells OSG She Wants to Make a Better National Marriage Through Communism

Juanita Burnett is running for the third time to represent Guelph, and the first time for the Federal seat. She’s been the steadfast Communist candidate since 2014, in a town that literally helped found the Canadian wing of the Communist Party in 1921. Burnett was the first guest on this elections round of candidate interviews on Open Sources Guelph. GUELPH POLITICAST #182 – Maxime Bernier’s Guelph Town Hall

As we count down to the start of the 2019 Federal Election, we will likely see several special guests from the various political parties come to town, including the leaders themselves. Of course, you’ll recall that at least two party leaders have already come to the Royal City, in last week’s bonus episode you heard from one, and this week, you’ll hear from another. Schreiner Has Thoughts on the Budget and Other Matters on OSG

Last week’s revelation of the Ontario Budget is the latest in a line of announcements from the Ontario government meant to amaze or confuse. From tax credits, to new license plates, to fewer restrictions on booze, the budget was meant to have something for everyone, but what did Guelph’s MPP and Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner think of it? Continue reading “Schreiner Has Thoughts on the Budget and Other Matters on OSG”

GUELPH POLITICAST #164 – The Rookies (OSG Interviews)

Today, students and community groups on campuses across Ontario will go on strike to protest the Ontario government’s Student Choice Initiative, which could defund in part, or entirely, a lot of different campus clubs, services, and yes, media. One such impacted group would be CFRU, the community radio station that operates out of the University of Guelph. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #164 – The Rookies (OSG Interviews)”

This week, Open Sources Guelph will give up cynicism for Lent. Just kidding! We might as well give up breathing!! So considering that, we’ll spend this week talking about the end of the Liberal Party of Canada, and the death knell of the New Democrats. Good thing we didn’t give up hyperbole for Lent either. In any event, we’ll welcome back an old friend from Ward 2 to talk about the budget, and all the latest issues from City Hall.

Karl Wettstein Offers Some Final Thoughts on Council Career on Open Sources

Tonight, the 2014-18 council meets for the final time before the turnover on December 3. One of the two people that will not be on the new council is Karl Wettstein, and before departing the council chamber one last time, the outgoing Ward 6 councillor stopped by CFRU!

Before calling it a political career, Wettstein stopped by to chat with the Open Sources Guelph gang to talk about his time on council, what experiences he’s taking with him, and what lessons he hopes to leave behind. That’s in the back half of the show though, for the first half we talk about the latest troubles in the White House and Queen’s Park.

You can listen to the show by following the link below, and you can also download Open Sources Guelph on the Guelph Politicast network via iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, and Spotify on whatever mobile device you listen to podcasts on.

This week, Open Sources Guelph is awash in galling behaviour. In the United States, the President decided to skip the opportunity to remember veterans so he could pout and rage tweet in his hotel room, and in Ontario’s capital building you still never know who might be a scandal waiting to happen. It’s a bummer to be sure, and one that’s compounded this week as we say goodbye to a regular guest as he retires from the political stage.

Listen to O’Rourke’s First Sit Down Interview with Open Sources!

The new city council, which, admittedly, is mostly the old city council, will take their seats around the horseshoe in just a few weeks. As the two new councillors get ready to take up their positions, one of them came by CFRU last Thursday for the first of what will likely be many little chats.

On the last edition of Open Sources Guelph, we were joined in studio by Dominique O’Rourke, the incoming City Councillor for Ward 6. O’Rourke talked about her decisive victory, her plans as a councillor, and how she intends to balance all the prioritites – hers and the City’s – in her first few months of office.

After taking a couple of weeks off from election talk, we’re back at it this week on Open Sources Guelph! In fact, we’ve missed elections so much, we’re importing coverage. First, we’ll get a delivery from the U.S. as the highly contentious midterm elections have wrapped up for another four years. Meanwhile, people in Calgary are having an election, but in this one you can’t ignore the issues because it’s a plebiscite! Back home, we will welcome to the show our first post-election interview with a new city councillor.

Election Follow-Up Discussion on Open Sources

You thought the election was over? Sorry, we have to have one last say on the matter from this week’s Open Sources Guelph, which you can now download on the Guelph Politicast channel.

The first segment of last Thursday’s show focuses on the results of the municipal election in Guelph, and around Ontario. But stay tuned to the rest of the show as we discuss legal cannabis, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, and what’s in store for the next election in 2019.

Finally, we’re getting back to normal on this week’s edition of Open Sources Guelph, and by “normal”, we mean in Trump adjusted terms. The big man will come up in a tertiary way on today’s show, but he will not be our focus. Instead, we’ll be looking at the fallout of the Municipal Election race here in Guelph and other places, the ongoing controversy over the apparent murder of a journalist in Turkey, the lack of controversy from Canada legalizing pot, and we’ll look ahead to the next election. (Naturally.)
