GUELPH POLITICAST #329 – Reconciliation, As a Municipal Matter

With this being National Indigenous History Month it seems appropriate to look at how our local government is adapting to make Indigenous communities a more active part of governance at City Hall. How can we acknowledge the history of the land and then refuse to give the traditional landholders more of a say in what happens upon it? We can’t, and staff members at the City of Guelph are working on that. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #329 – Reconciliation, As a Municipal Matter”

GUELPH POLITICAST #208 – The Real 1917

One of the likely contenders to win Best Picture at this year’s Oscars is 1917, Sam Mendes’ film about two soldiers racing through enemy territory on a mission to save hundreds of their fellow soldiers. It’s good, but but how does the movie, and it’s exceptional attention to detail, stand up to the scrutiny of experts who know all the ins and outs of the Great War? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #175 – In Conversation at Guelph Civic Museum”

GUELPH POLITICAST #27 – Jessica Gibson, Guelph Museums

The nation marked Remembrance Day last week, but in a very real sense, Guelph has been marking Remembrance Day all year long. This December will mark the 100th anniversary of the publication of “In Flanders Field,” a simple 15 line poem that captured the horror, honour, camaraderie and hopefulness of World War One. It was written by an army doctor name John McCrae, and Guelph is his hometown, thus making this centenary very important to the Royal City. So I sought our someone to talk about it.
