MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for February 13, 2023
For February’s Heritage Guelph meeting, it feels like we’re resetting the table for the tricky years ahead. Two items will be before the committee this month, both already familiar to the public at large; Heritage Guelph will formally recommend the shape and size of the heritage district at the old jail lands, and then begin the busy work of saving as much heritage as they can in the next 24 months. Guthrie Drops Gimmicks for Serious Talk at State of the City
Over 850 people made their way to the Delta Hotel on Stone Road for the annual winter ritual of hearing the mayor talk. The Chamber of Commerce’s State of the City event for 2023 had the usual aspirational statements and hopeful outlook about the future, but it also came with a warning about the tough times ahead and the need to work together as a community to meet the challenges were all familiar with by now. City Staff, Council Take a Ride on the New EV Bus
After creating a sensation on social media when it arrived at Guelph Transit HQ on Friday, the City of Guelph’s first electric bus pulled in front of City Hall so that members of city council and members of City senior staff could take a closer look. The new bus received rave reviews for its spaciousness and the relative silence inside the vehicle, but it’s still going to be a while before transit users will be able to check that out for themselves. This Week at Council: New Strategic Plan Process Begins, and the 2023 Budget Confirmation
This was a very busy week at city council with three meetings, one of which was a super-long meeting indeed. Obviously, that long meeting concerned the confirmation vote for the 2023 budget, which saw council trying to balance community need with a hopefully smaller tax burden for the public. This balance was also kind of reinforced by another meeting this week, which looked at creating the next Strategic Plan.
