Responding to a motion from Guelph City Council to hold an emergency meeting on homelessness in Downtown Guelph, the Wellington County’s social services committee gathered to address those concerns. The long meeting (by committee standards) saw members agree with Guelph’s leaders that more needs to done, and backed up council’s calls for action. How did we get here? Just a couple of days after Guelph City Council ratified a slate of motions meant to direct action on homelessness, mental health and addiction issues in Downtown Guelph, the City’s social services provider will gather the committee that oversees them for a special meeting. The annual confluence of June festivities including Pride Month, National Indigenous History Month and Juneteenth make this month a cause for joy and excitement, but it also seems like a cause for consternation. A recent round of vandalism in the area has target Pride flags, Indigenous groups, and a local Black History landmark, and that’s creating concerns in communities that should be celebrating. Delayed one year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff from Wellington County and the Guelph-Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination presented the results from the latest Point in Time Count on Wednesday. Conducted over two days last October, the Point in Time Count gives the community a snap shot of homelessness in our area, and despite the challenges of the pandemic, the count is heading in the right direction. Almost two years after both the City of Guelph and the County of Wellington initiated states of emergency in dealing with COVID-19, both governments are announcing their end next week. Coinciding with the previously announced end to proof of vaccination from the Government of Ontario, both the County and the City will end their emergency declaration and measures on March 1. For the last few weeks, there’s been an air of anticipation that the City of Guelph might soon emerge from the state of emergency initiated in March 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Blame Omicron, but the end of the state of emergency has been indefinitely postponed as the City aims to “mobilize City resources as needed” in order to stay on top of this latest COVID-19 variant. Time was running out for the people who have living in Loyola House for the last year as the County of Wellington’s lease for their Loyola House Supportive Temporary Accommodation Pilot (LHSTAP) was due to run out on Tuesday. Well, there’s good news for the temporary residents of Loyola House because they are moving down to the other end of Woodlawn for the foreseeable future.
