In the wake of growing concerns over the Omicron variant, and the increased number of COVID-19 cases, many people thought that Tuesday’s update from Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore was going to make more news than it did. Around a dozen protestors stood in front of the Edinburgh Road entrance to the St. Joseph’s Health Centre on Saturday over a labour issue. The issue? The long-term care home’s vaccine mandate. Several members of the protest identified themselves as personal support workers now let go from St. Joe’s because they refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Nearly 4,000 Ontarians have died in long-term care homes because of COVID-19. It prompted a new independent commission to investigate the subject at Queen’s Park that returned several recommendations this past spring, and on Thursday the government announced the legislative plan to act on those recommendations. Still, all the opposition leaders are suspicious about whether today’s bill is the change everyone was seeking. After a month off, Guelph’s city council got to work again around the virtual horseshoe and handled a lot of business, but September wasn’t as busy as some months this year. There wasn’t a lot of controversy either, but there was a lot of regular order type business taken care of including changes to payday loan businesses, a third-party trails agreement, some planning meetings, and a draft plan for Clair-Maltby. Tomorrow, Ontario opens into phase two of the provincial re-opening framework, which means there’s more access to more places, and it appears that some of those places now include long-term care homes and Guelph General Hospital. From the Government of Ontario is news that visitor restrictions are being eased in Ontario long-term care homes, while locally Guelph General is doing the same.
