It’s a cold late Friday afternoon in January, so naturally it’s the perfect time to resign from a high-level provincial cabinet position with a minimum of attention from the media. Nearly 4,000 Ontarians have died in long-term care homes because of COVID-19. It prompted a new independent commission to investigate the subject at Queen’s Park that returned several recommendations this past spring, and on Thursday the government announced the legislative plan to act on those recommendations. Still, all the opposition leaders are suspicious about whether today’s bill is the change everyone was seeking. A little over six months late from the actual start of the Provincial fiscal year, the Government of Ontario delivered the 2020-2021 budget with some of the usual fanfare. Called, “Ontario’s Action Plan: Protect, Support, Recover,” the government insists that their budget will strengthen frontline health care, and offer support for businesses and workers, while laying the groundwork for the future. In an early gift for Ontarians before the long weekend, the Government of Ontario announced that they are initiating Stage One of their plan to re-open the economy. Starting Saturday, some economic restrictions will start to lifted be, followed by a few more on Tuesday even though the provincial state of emergency was extended by the Legislature just two days ago. The original plan was to unveil the fiscal 2020/2021 budget in the Ontario legislature tomorrow. Instead, the Government of Ontario announced this afternoon that they’re going to spend billions of dollars in the short-term to help the province fight the COVID-19 pandemic with new health spending, and economic support for workers and businesses.
