This last council meeting for the month of June is slightly embiggened from the size it was originally supposed to be due to a couple of imported items from the aborted planning meeting earlier this week. If it’s the end of June, then it’s time for what is, in essence, the annual general meetings for the two corporations that the City of Guelph is the sole shareholder of. At this meeting, we will learn about what kind of year it’s been for Guelph Municipal Holdings Inc. and Guelph Junction Railway. The annual confluence of June festivities including Pride Month, National Indigenous History Month and Juneteenth make this month a cause for joy and excitement, but it also seems like a cause for consternation. A recent round of vandalism in the area has target Pride flags, Indigenous groups, and a local Black History landmark, and that’s creating concerns in communities that should be celebrating. The election campaign is over, but even the candidates that won are still looking to make good on election promises. In the midst of the 2022 provincial election campaign that returned Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives to office nearly two weeks ago, newly elected Guelph MPP made a promise to double the rates people receiving ODSP. Just over a week ago, Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner was pretty overwhelmingly re-elected as the MPP for the riding of Guelph. With 54.46 per cent of the vote, Guelph sent a strong message that they like the way Schreiner does business at Queen’s Park even while the rest of Ontario sent a stronger Ford government to the legislature.
