GUELPH POLITICAST #322 – Education is an Issue

Covering education issues has been weird the last couple of years during the pandemic; while keeping schools open for in-person learning was a priority, teachers felt that their concerns weren’t being heard. Now, education is struggling to be made an election priority, and education workers have been trying to put their concerns back on the frontburner since March 2020, so this seems like an interesting place to begin a provincial campaign. GUELPH POLITICAST #321 – The Eviction Notice is Just the Beginning of Your Troubles

If there’s one thing we can agree on, it’s that people shouldn’t be forced out of their home after a minor dispute with their landlord. Yes, that happens, and it happens often, but it’s been happening a lot more since the Landlord and Tenant Board went virtual, and that made access to the internet another barrier to housing. This seems like something worth talking about. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #321 – The Eviction Notice is Just the Beginning of Your Troubles”

GUELPH POLITICAST #320 – The Queen of Craft

Historically, women played a pretty big role in the brewing of beer. Starting in ancient times, brewing was fairly female-dominated, but that changed in western culture around the same time the brewing process became industrialized 150 years ago. In 2022, women are trying to reclaim their place atop the brewing world thanks to the proliferation of craft breweries, and one local woman is helping to lead the way. GUELPH POLITICAST #319 – A Movie’s Case for Kindness

In good company after last week’s episode with Marlene director Wendy Hill-Tout, and just in time for both Canadian Film Day on April 20 and this year’s edition of the Hot Docs documentary film festival starting on April 28, this week, we’re talking to a documentary filmmaker. You know about the COVID-19 pandemic, but another pandemic has been affected people a lot longer. This is one of those stories. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #319 – A Movie’s Case for Kindness”

GUELPH POLITICAST #318 – Telling Marlene’s Story

We don’t get a lot of movie premieres here in Guelph, so when one happens it’s kind of a big deal. Coming to the Bookshelf Cinema this Friday is Marlene, the story of self-selecting Guelphites Marlene Truscott and her husband Steven Truscott, whose life story involves one of the worst miscarriages of justice in Canadian history. Now it’s a movie, and according to its director, a romance at that. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #318 – Telling Marlene’s Story”

GUELPH POLITICAST #317 – Is This the End of the Pandemic*?

*You might be forgiven to think this whole COVID-19 pandemic is in the bag. It’s been a week-and-a-half since the mask mandates were repealed in Ontario and in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health region, and like clockwork the number of COVID cases in the public, and in the hospital, are going up. You might be fed up, you might be fully vaccinated and boosted, but that doesn’t mean the pandemic is over. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #317 – Is This the End of the Pandemic*?”

GUELPH POLITICAST #316 – Can You Archeologically Dig It?

There’s a lot of interest in the excavation of Baker Street. Maybe it’s the ghoulish quality of uncovering remains from an old graveyard, or maybe it’s because this is all literally happening on the main street, but a lot of eyes are on this big hole being dug in the old Baker Street lot. This week, we go inside that hole with the two men holding the shovels. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #316 – Can You Archeologically Dig It?”

GUELPH POLITICAST #315 – COVID Begins

We have come to know what it’s like to live with COVID-19, even if we don’t like, but almost exactly two years ago today, we were freaking out. Remember wiping down your groceries with anti-bacterial wipes? Remember the run on toilet paper? Remember when we thought we could stamp this out in two weeks? Times sure have changed, but are we really at the end of COVID considering how it began? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #315 – COVID Begins”

GUELPH POLITICAST #314 – The Environment, an Election, a Premier, and His Politics

Just in time for this podcast, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released another report last week, which was described by UN Secretary-General as “an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership.” So what’s the current provincial government’s record on fighting climate change, and with an election that’s now less than three months away? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #314 – The Environment, an Election, a Premier, and His Politics”

GUELPH POLITICAST #313 – Still COVID with Dr. Mercer (Winter Edition)

As you click play on this episode, we’re officially in a new phase of the pandemic. More restrictions were lifted on March 1, and Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health is assuring us that it’s only a matter of time now till our masking days are behind us. So it’s good news, right? Maybe. Let’s ask *the* local expect if the reason for optimism is real! Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #313 – Still COVID with Dr. Mercer (Winter Edition)”
