Tuesday marked exactly one week before the beginning of the school year. It’s a time when students, teachers, parents and school workers get themselves ready to start the next 10 months of learning on the right foot, but there’s presently a concern that the coming school year will actually be starting off on the wrong foot. Earlier this year, the Communist Party of Canada celebrated its 100th anniversary as a political entity in Canada. The party organized in a barn on Metcalfe Street in 2021, which was, at the time, on the outskirts of Guelph, so in this centenary year it was pretty important that the Communists have a candidate in this Federal Election. Michael Chong won Wellington Halton-Hills in the 2019 election with 47.4 per cent of the vote. The only way he could have been defeated was if the combined Liberal, NDP, and Green Party vote had gotten behind one candidate. The word “untouchable” would not be an overstatement, but there’s a new kid in town that hopes to catch everyone, and Chong, by surprise. After weeks of excuses – from saying that they didn’t want to create a two-tiered system, to saying that a piece of paper easily copied in Microsoft Word was fine as proof – there’s news Friday night that the Government of Ontario might be changing their minds on vaccine certificates. Sources are telling multiple media outlets that so-called vaccine passports are on the cabinet agenda next week, and not a moment too soon. As the Province government struggles with wrapping its head around vaccine certificates for the whole of Ontario, anyone that wants to get into City Hall will now definitely have to show their proof of vaccination. On Friday morning, the City of Guelph formally announced that everyone at the Corporation of the City of Guelph will need to be fully vaccinated with limited exceptions.
