The first planning meeting of the year only has one item on the agenda, but it’s kind of consequential when you consider that it covers all matters of Guelph land use planning over the next three decades. After many meetings in the last year looking at growth issues in the Royal City, council will finally consider the finished document and determine how Guelph will grow over the 30 years (28 years technically). This Month at Council: Race to Zero, Hotel Redo, and Downtown Drama

The year at city council ended with what actually might be some of their most intense debates. In December, there was a pretty fiery discussion about accelerating the City’s response to climate change, a new debate about whether a governance review is needed for the downtown business improvement area, and there was even some time for a public meeting on a rezoning and a brand new heritage designation. This Month at Council: Voting Methods, Route Review, and Zoning Bylaw Changes

At every planning meeting, council hears about applications to change the zoning bylaw to allow for the construction of some new project somewhere in the city, and they’re usually looking for some kind of change to the regulations as well like a bigger yard or less parking.
