The latest venue for the controversy over the emergency demolition of 797 Victoria Road North is the one that it skipped to begin with. At the Heritage Guelph meeting on Tuesday, members of the committee got to ask staff questions about what the heck happened, and how everyone can avoid letting it happen again. Basically, there was no intended slight, but the risk to life made staff “miss” all other considerations. City of Guelph crews are currently set up at the Baker Street parking lot to look for bodies. The archeological preparation happening now is part of the ground work to redevelop Baker Street for a new residential project and the new main building for the Guelph Public Library. Just a few weeks ago, Guelph Member of Parliament Lloyd Longfield was re-elected to his position in Ottawa in a pretty overwhelming fashion. It wasn’t an easy road, there were a lot of angry questions about the Federal Liberals action (or lack there of) on climate change, the COVID-19 response, and Truth and Reconciliation. If it’s fall at city council, then that means a lot of people are thinking about the budget. That budget process will be different this year as council moves further along the path of establishing a four-year multiyear budget regimen, but before getting into the nuts and bolts, staff will be holding another workshop with council to get their mind set on deciding what’s important, and what’s affordable with this budget. After a lengthy closed meeting debate, and two emergency meetings, city council has finally released the details around the emergency demolition ordered for the old Shortreed Farmhouse at 797 Victoria Road North. The redacted report outlines in specific detail the risk to the property, and the risk to the City of Guelph’s liability without the demolition after several meetings between Guelph Fire and the Grand River Conservation Authority.
