Innovation pays. At least that seems to be lesson from Friday morning’s announcement with Guelph’s Member of Parliament, the Mayor of Guelph, the Chief Administrative Officer, the Warden for Wellington County and the Smart Cities office. The Federal government opened its wallet this morning to give the Smart Cities office at additional $5 million to further their efforts to build a circular food economy and fund new sustainability initiatives. It was April Fool’s Day, but the announcement was no joke. The Federal and Provincial governments teamed up on Thursday to make $6 million in funding available for three local community centres in Guelph and Wellington County. To reduce the impacts of COVID, create job growth and invest in the future, HOPE House, YMCA of Three Rivers in Guelph, and the Elora Community Centre are getting some help with renovations. There’s been a lot discussion about how positive change in society might be incited as we recover from the pandemic, and nearly a million dollars helps buy a lot of positive change. On Wednesday, it was announced that Guelph’s 10C Shared Space, along with the Pillar Nonprofit Network in London, are receiving $899,921 from the Federal government to work towards sustainable development goals (SDG). The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that the Federal government can impose a price on carbon. The 6-3 decision was released on Thursday morning, and effectively ends a joint appeal by the Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan governments of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, aka: the Carbon Tax. Times have been tough for seniors over the last year. COVID-19 has hit them especially hard, and even now with the vaccine rollout and some signs of recovery, the burden of this pandemic is still disproportionately falling on them. Seniors have a lot of concerns, so who better to hear them than Canada’s Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte, who took part in a virtual roundtable discussion with Guelph seniors’ groups Wednesday. In the midst of dealing with all things COVID, the Federal government is also in the process of working on new gun control legislation that they hope will have an impact on the various crimes involving firearms. There has been some criticism of Bill C-21 and whether it can actually have an effect on crimes where guns are used, but Public Safety Minister Bill Blair took part in meetings with area groups Thursday to try and make the point. There’s a Federal Election coming, but we don’t know when.
