The Week at Council: The Strategic Plan Gets Further Refined
It was a slow week at city council, but it was still a pretty consequential week as the horseshoe dealt with a sudden matter of community interest in a special meeting, and then got back to the business of refreshing the Strategic Plan. Many notes were offered in the all virtual meeting (thanks #ONstorm!), and now it will be up to the consultants to further refine things into a first draft. Here’s what happened in meeting… Continue reading “The Week at Council: The Strategic Plan Gets Further Refined”
POLICE NOTES: More Charges in Bullfrog Stabbing, and Witnesses Need for 2022 Arrest
There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days. Guelphites Stand With Ukraine on First Anniversary of Russian Invasion
Although the war still rages in Ukraine, over 200 people came out to Guelph City Hall on a cold Friday night to send the message that we haven’t forgotten. Hopes and prayers were offered that there won’t be a similar vigil at the same time in 2024, but there was also gratitude for the outreach and support, and a special message from a Ukrainian woman who now lives in Guelph after escaping the war back home. MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for March 9, 2023
There’s nothing terribly controversial at March’s Committee of Adjustment this month, but, as ever, controversy is in the eye of the beholder. Some plans will see current properties break off like amoebas and become two properties, some plans include demolitions, and there’s at least one case of a property that the owner feels is not zoned right. This is what’s on the agenda for March… Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for March 9, 2023”
RECAP: The GRCA Approves Their 2023 Budget and Other Business
The February general meeting of the Grand River Conservation Authority was pretty important as the authority passed its 2023 budget, a complicated process made even trickier by the pressures from new legislation. Still, the process was handled with great efficiency, and it was just one of several pieces of business handled by the board. Here’s the recap of the meeting… Continue reading “RECAP: The GRCA Approves Their 2023 Budget and Other Business”

Committee of the Whole Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the March 7 Meeting?
It’s a jammed-packed agenda at March’s Committee of the Whole meeting; dare we say there’s something for everyone? From the desk of Corporate Services we’ve got some budget information. From Public Services we’re going to hear more about trees and AirBnBs. And then, it’s the big one, how we’re going to build the South End Community Centre with all the economic pressures. GUELPH POLITICAST #361 – The Convoy Was the End of the Beginning
Thursday marks one-year since the official end of the “Freedom Convoy”, a series of protests against COVID protection measures, vaccine mandates and lockdowns that paralyzed downtown Ottawa and border crossings at Windsor and Coutts for weeks. Yes, the Convoy flamed out, but the complex web of thoughts and ideas behind the Convoy are still out there.
