RECAP: Guelph Sports Groups Agree That They Need More Space (Plus Video)
On Thursday night, Councillor Dan Gibson hosted a town hall at City Hall that gathered representatives from many different sports groups around the city to look at the challenges facing local sports and to begin the process of organizing. Despite the forward momentum on the South End Community Centre, it was the main point of the town hall that we’re still lacking space for just about every sport you can think of. RECAP: Ward 2 Councillors Hear Concerns About High Density Designation
It’s quite unusual to have a town hall meeting with ward councillors in the middle of summer and in the middle of an election year, but these are unusual times. In advance of a special meeting on Monday about the newest Official Plan Amendment, Ward 2 Councillors James Gordon and Rodrigo Goller, plus Ward 5 Councillor Leanne Caron, lead a virtual town hall about the high density zoning of 41-45 George Street. Here’s what happened…. Continue reading “RECAP: Ward 2 Councillors Hear Concerns About High Density Designation”
Guelph Organizers Holding Conference on “Human Rights” Kitchener
This weekend, a group of bikers called “Rolling Thunder Ottawa” will be protesting in the nation’s capital for restoring “fundamental rights and freedoms” as part of a campaign dedicated to the “end of all tyrannical bills and legislation.” More locally, Guelph organizers are planning a town hall called “Shifting Perspectives: The Erosion of Human Rights.” Sounds interesting, right? However it sounds, this, and the biker rally, are both about the same things: conspiracy theories and COVID misinformation. RECAP: Ward 5 Councillors Talk About Planning Stuff at Town Hall
It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve had a nice, friendly town hall with a pair of the ward councillors. U of G Execs Confident They’re Ready for Monday Re-Opening
The University of Guelph re-opens for in-person learning on Monday, and members of the executive team held a town hall on Thursday to send students, parents, staff and faculty a unified message: They were ready for the return, and all measures are being taken to make sure everything will be as safe as possible. In fact, it was phrased as something of an imperative that students return to campus on Monday. Continue reading “U of G Execs Confident They’re Ready for Monday Re-Opening”
RECAP: Ward 4 Reps and GNSC Head Get Last Word Before Budget Night
Less than 48 hours before the final decisions about the 2022 and 2023 budget have to be made, the Councillors from Ward 4 got the last word with their “Community Conversation.” Much of the conservation centred around the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition and the work being done by their associates in the west end, but a pretty good picture was painted about the need for some of that funding. Shall we go over the recap? Continue reading “RECAP: Ward 4 Reps and GNSC Head Get Last Word Before Budget Night”
RECAP: The Ward 6 Town Hall Overcomes Technical Difficulties
Wednesday night’s town hall with the Ward 6 city councillors will probably go down in history based more on the technological hiccups suffered than the number of issues discussed, but the difficulties also showed the dedication of a small group of citizens who wanted to talk about the budget, and Ward 6 business. Check out the recap below. Continue reading “RECAP: The Ward 6 Town Hall Overcomes Technical Difficulties”
RECAP: Ward 5 Town Hall Covers Traffic, Train and Drive Thru Concerns
The above picture is from a time when these sorts of town halls happened in-person, but not for the first time, this town hall was held on Zoom. On Wednesday night, Ward 5 Councillors Leanne Caron and Cathy Downer talked to constituents about traffic issues in the ward and other updates including recent developments and the ward boundary review. Check out the recap of the live coverage below. Continue reading “RECAP: Ward 5 Town Hall Covers Traffic, Train and Drive Thru Concerns”
RECAP: Guthrie Talks about Restrictions, Signs of Hope and Other Things in Live Chat
If you happened to be on Facebook Tuesday night, you might have come across an impromptu Q&A with Guelph’s Mayor, Cam Guthrie. The nearly hour-long affair covered a wide range of topics that were mostly related to COVID-19 and the recent provincial restrictions, though there were some oldies-but-goldies like complaints about the new library, and the lack of an east-end grocery store. There was also a cameo from an honest to goodness local anti-mask celebrity! Continue reading “RECAP: Guthrie Talks about Restrictions, Signs of Hope and Other Things in Live Chat”
