On Thursday night, Councillor Dan Gibson hosted a town hall at City Hall that gathered representatives from many different sports groups around the city to look at the challenges facing local sports and to begin the process of organizing. This weekend, a group of bikers called “Rolling Thunder Ottawa” will be protesting in the nation’s capital for restoring “fundamental rights and freedoms” as part of a campaign dedicated to the “end of all tyrannical bills and legislation.” More locally, Guelph organizers are planning a town hall called “Shifting Perspectives: The Erosion of Human Rights.” Sounds interesting, right? However it sounds, this, and the biker rally, are both about the same things: conspiracy theories and COVID misinformation. It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve had a nice, friendly town hall with a pair of the ward councillors. If you’ve been missing that interaction, Tuesday night was the perfect night for a little back and forth between council reps and constituents, especially if you live in Ward 5, are interested in Ward 5, or are interested in city planning matters. The University of Guelph re-opens for in-person learning on Monday, and members of the executive team held a town hall on Thursday to send students, parents, staff and faculty a unified message: They were ready for the return, and all measures are being taken to make sure everything will be as safe as possible. Less than 48 hours before the final decisions about the 2022 and 2023 budget have to be made, the Councillors from Ward 4 got the last word with their “Community Conversation.” Much of the conservation centred around the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition and the work being done by their associates in the west end, but a pretty good picture was painted about the need for some of that funding. If you happened to be on Facebook Tuesday night, you might have come across an impromptu Q&A with Guelph’s Mayor, Cam Guthrie. The nearly hour-long affair covered a wide range of topics that were mostly related to COVID-19 and the recent provincial restrictions, though there were some oldies-but-goldies like complaints about the new library, and the lack of an east-end grocery store.
