Repeated in the Throne Speech last month was the Liberal government’s dedication to reforming Canada’s electoral system, and ensuring that 2015 is the last election using “First Past the Post.” Some are sceptical of the government’s intentions, others doubt it’s doing to be a done deal by the government’s own 18 month deadline, but the grassroots support that made electoral reform an election priority isn’t about to let those in government forget that promise. Crash Stats for 2015 Show Small Improvement, More Concerns
The Guelph Police Service has released it’s annual year end report of local collision statistics, and while there’s some cause for optimism in the fact that the number of total reported collisions went down as compared to this time last year, in taking a closer look at the statistics, there’s still a lot to be concerned about. Galatianos Fights City Hall and Wins.. Ish
If Jim Galatianos can take pride in one thing, it’s that he managed to subvert the old adage, “You can’t beat city hall.” But that surely comes as cold comfort to the former city council candidate who spent nearly six years and thousands of dollars to get City of Guelph staff to admit that they overstepped their authority when they removed what they called “debris,” and added a charge to his tax bill for the privilege. New Rules for Drivers in the New Year
New year; new rules. At least so far as what you do when you’re a driver and how long you’re supposed to wait before turning when someone’s walking across the street. As a walker, this is a big pet peeve of mine: drivers either whiz past you with barely inches to spare, or passive aggressively turn as slow as possible as you walk on through. The only regret? Guelph Protesters Amongst Line 9 Arrests
The days of rowdy protests in Guelph seem to have come and gone. Among three activists arrested yesterday for protesting the Line 9 pipeline in Sarnia were two Guelph women. Continue reading “Guelph Protesters Amongst Line 9 Arrests”

According to the CBC, first responders were able to contain the spill, but the road is still closed and will be closed until all relevant agencies clear the scene. City Reveals the Secret of the Ooze on the Speed
If you walked along the Speed River recently and noticed something weird about the water, you’re not alone. For the record, it was an oil spill, but fortunately it’s not the type of oil spill that typically makes headlines. Continue reading “City Reveals the Secret of the Ooze on the Speed”
BUDGET 2016: MacKinnon Expands on No Vote
Shortly after the razor thin vote of 7-6 in favour of the 2016 Budget, Ward 6 Councillor Mark MacKinnon sent out the above tweet. I decided to ask him to expand on his comment, and although he, like many councillors, was committed to bringing in a lower increase for the next year, that actually wasn’t the crux of where he disagreed with the approved budget. As per tradition, the city’s press office sent out a press release following the meeting announcing success.
