This Week a Council: Planning Meeting Interruptus
This month’s planning meeting had more than a few surprises, including a cliffhanger! The stacked agenda covered an important heritage designation, a new plan for affordable housing, the approval of new housing geared to students, and the beginning of the final phase of the Heritage District study for the Ontario Reformatory Lands. Easy-peasy, right? Don’t be so sure until you’ve read till the end of the recap! Continue reading “This Week a Council: Planning Meeting Interruptus”
POLICE NOTES: Cut Cords, Bar Fight and Stolen Truck Burned
There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Additional November 19, 2024 Meeting?
What’s this? A surprise meeting? Yes, an additional meeting agenda for this coming Tuesday appeared on the council calendar Friday with exactly two items on it. MEETING PREVIEW: Transit Advisory Committee Meeting for November 21, 2024
There’s been a lot of talk about Guelph Transit lately between the potential transit worker strike cancelled at the last minute and proposed cuts in the 2025 budget, but things will more or less be ordinary business for this meeting of the Transit Advisory Committee. Or perhaps we should say “ordinary for now” because the committee will talk about its potential future along with some of the usual matters. Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Transit Advisory Committee Meeting for November 21, 2024”
City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the November 27, 2024 Meeting?
And we reach the grand finale of this year’s budget confirmation process, or we don’t. This could be the end of the budget process, but on the other hand there might be vetos and the repeal of vetos, but those are problems for another day. This day is about amendments, councillors will be able to finally have their day and amend the now confirmed 2025 budget, and that’s where the proverbial fun begins. This preview will show us where we start from… Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the November 27, 2024 Meeting?”
City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the November 26, 2024 Meeting?
Like last month’s regular meeting, this one takes place the day before a budget meeting, and like last month’s meeting it might be deceptively straightforward. There’s only one item to be revisited from Committee of the Whole, and then there are a couple of items on the closed meeting agenda, but is that the end of the story? We will have to wait until November 26 to know for sure, but for now, here’s the preview! Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the November 26, 2024 Meeting?”

RECAP: Social Services Committee Plans the Future of Paramedic Services
This November meeting of the Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Committee saw much of the focus fall on the second half of that long name. After hearing about the lack of ambulance news at last month’s meeting, the City of Guelph staff came well prepared for this one. Too much? Maybe. In other news, some social housing in Guelph are getting green upgrades and there’s good news for childcare. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Social Services Committee Plans the Future of Paramedic Services”
