The Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) spent the day in Guelph on Friday with nearly $13 million to burn in her pocket. Two stops on her public schedule delivered money for a new green technology innovation fund, and money to help improve area tourist attractions including Guelph’s biggest and most famous park. Bookended by intense debates around the demand for more park space, new bans on a variety of single-use plastics, and the delegation of authority to staff when planned capital go way over budget, the month also dealt with a heritage appeal, a new big density development and the new Community Benefit Charges. The Ontario general election may unofficially be underway, but Premier Doug Ford has until Wednesday to have the Legislature dissolved and the writs drawn up to make the election campaign a real thing that’s happening. This weekend, a group of bikers called “Rolling Thunder Ottawa” will be protesting in the nation’s capital for restoring “fundamental rights and freedoms” as part of a campaign dedicated to the “end of all tyrannical bills and legislation.” More locally, Guelph organizers are planning a town hall called “Shifting Perspectives: The Erosion of Human Rights.” Sounds interesting, right? However it sounds, this, and the biker rally, are both about the same things: conspiracy theories and COVID misinformation. If there’s one thing we can agree on, it’s that people shouldn’t be forced out of their home after a minor dispute with their landlord. Yes, that happens, and it happens often, but it’s been happening a lot more since the Landlord and Tenant Board went virtual, and that made access to the internet another barrier to housing. The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, and that’s why an important position has been filled at the top of the regional COVID response, the hospital lead. The position was vacated earlier this month, but it’s now been filled by none other than the Guelph General Hospital’s CEO Marianne Walker, who notes hospitals are still being challenged by both the number of patients with COVID, and the number of staff members who are also sick.
