At a media even on Wednesday morning, Sarah Ricci of the Shelburne Long-Term Care home became the first person in Wellington, Dufferin or Guelph to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. We talk a lot about the dangers faced by frontine workers during the pandemic, and Monday we saw that first hand with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health declaring an outbreak at the Guelph Police Service. And since it doesn’t rain but it pours, public health itself announced Monday that they will not be rolling out vaccines today as originally planned. In what is perhaps the best bit of good news we might receive in these waning days of 2020, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has announced that they will be getting their first batch of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer next week. When you woke up this morning, it was two days till Christmas and three days till the start of a province-wide lockdown, and on this morning there was some good news and some concerning news. While the Government of Canada has approved the second vaccine for widespread distribution, there’s still no news about when our region might start getting the vaccine, but Public Health says they’re prepared when it happens. After weeks of speculation, the Government of Ontario formally announced on Monday that the province will be going back into lockdown on Boxing Day this Saturday. The province-wide increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases has prompted the Provincial government to give the gift of staying at home the day after Christmas even as new areas in the GTA entered grey-level lockdowns on Monday. During the pandemic, almost every business has been touched and affected by COVID-19, but if we were to make a list of the *most* affected businesses, meat packing plants would be in the Top 5, if not the Top 3. After weeks of increasing concern about the extent of an outbreak there, the Cargill meat processing plant on Dunlop Drive in Guelph has been temporarily shut down after approximately 200 people there have been tested for the virus. Although vaccines have started going out across the county, there’s still a lot of time left to live in this pandemic before most of us get one, and that case was proven again today with the announcement that there’s a COVID-19 outbreak at Guelph General Hospital. The administration at the General announced today that they’re declaring an outbreak in one of their wards, which has so far affected patients, but not staff. Earlier this week, our local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nicola Mercer suggested that Wellington, Dufferin, and Guelph should be moved into the Red-Control level this week due to the increasing rate of COVID-19 infection in the area. Today, the Government of Ontario granted her request as seven different health authorities moved up the ladder of protection, including two that are going into lockdown. No one in Ontario has been saying “Thank God, it’s Friday,” lately because Friday is the day that the Government of Ontario announces who’s moving up, or more likely down, the colour-coded ladder back towards lockdown. In a rare instance of advocating for greater health restrictions, the Medical Officer of Health for Wellingt0n-Dufferin-Guelph is asking the Province to consider moving our area from orange to red this Friday.
