It was a long one this week at city council with three meetings and several potential issues of controversy. One shareholder meeting went by with zero controversy, but the other one literally packed the gallery with concern about trails along the railways. At the regular meeting, the Committee of the Whole ratification still had some juice, especially around a (for some reason) controversial bridge. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Trail Talk, and the Bridge Stays in the Picture”

RECAP: Downtown Construction and Budget Updates at Ward 5 Town Hall
On Wednesday night, residents of Ward 5 made it to the southeast part of the riding(?) for a town hall with their city councillors, Leanne Caron and Cathy Downer, but a big portion of the meeting had to do with an area in another ward. At Arbour Vista Public School – once people were able to find their way to the library – residents heard about changes coming to downtown, changes coming to the 2026 budget, and answers to other concerns. Here’s the recap! Continue reading “RECAP: Downtown Construction and Budget Updates at Ward 5 Town Hall”

RECAP: Ward 2 Town Hall Tackled Downtown Construction and Fourplexes
It was a hot and sunny evening, so naturally about 40 people showed up at a town hall hosted by Ward 2 City Councillors Rodrigo Goller and Carly Klassen. There were two main topics of interest, one is the coming infrastructure renewal of downtown, and the other is the development of policy around fourplexes. There was also a bit of open mic for the people whose issues did not fall into one of those categories, but you can check it all out for yourself below… Continue reading “RECAP: Ward 2 Town Hall Tackled Downtown Construction and Fourplexes”
City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on May 22?
Been a while since we’ve had a workshop… So what’s the focus of this one? The future! More specifically though the future of downtown. Guelph’s main drag in the core will be getting some work done in the next decade, and if we’re working on all the stuff under the road, we can take the time to work on some stuff on top of the road, you know, give Wyndham Street a face lift. But what will it’s new face look like? Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on May 22?”
This Week at Council: Strong Mayor Blowback
What was supposed to be a rather unexceptional week at council turned out to be very busy indeed, and it really had nothing to do with what city council was working on. Upset about the Ontario government’s decision to grant Strong Mayor powers to most heads of council in the province’s biggest cities, several delegates came out to let council know it, but it turned out even staff have problems with the implementation. Here’s the recap. Continue reading “This Week at Council: Strong Mayor Blowback”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on June 27?
It’s the end of June, and this agenda certainly feels like it’s the last day of classes before summer vacation. Granted, there are still a bunch of meetings coming in July, but you’re looking for something new and exciting on this agenda, it appears that all you have is the stuff already talked about at Committee of the Whole. Can we find new controversy to exploit, or will this meeting be brief? Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on June 27?”
