Garbage. How often do you think about it? Well, at this meeting of council, the topic is unavoidable because not only is this special meeting and workshop of city council all about solid waste collection, it actually takes place in the building where all the solid waste is collected. There are some real changes coming to your local blue box in the next couple of years, and this meeting will help give you a heads up! Committee of the Whole Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the February 6, 2024 Meeting?
Hope everyone enjoyed the extra time off in January, because there’s a lot of serious business to take care of this February starting almost immediately with Committee of the Whole. For this first CoW of 2024, there’s some left over budget business to talk about, plus some construction business ahead for the downtown core. Also, there’s some staff recognitions, governance changes, and the return of downtown parking concerns. Stewart Announces Retirement as Guelph CAO This Summer
Some of us spend January making plans for the new year, but it seems like some of us were making plans for retirement. You may have noticed on the council calendar that the CAO Recruitment, Selection and Performance Sub-committee has met more this month than the whole of council, and maybe now there’s an understandable reason why: the City of Guelph is going to need a new Chief Administration Officer. The current one is retiring. Continue reading “Stewart Announces Retirement as Guelph CAO This Summer”

At the one and only meeting for January, your friends around the horseshoe handled some very particular business in closed session and then quickly dispatched three piece of business in the open session. There was some discussion about the new development charges bylaw, and whether growth pays for itself, so it may be a new year, but we’ve still got the same problems. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: One and Done For January”

RECAP: The Accessibility Committee Lands on a Direction for 2026 Voting Methods
The last meeting of 2023 went to the Accessibility Advisory Committee, who had a lot business to take care before the holiday break. The big piece is that after months of back and forth between staff and committee, we finally have a direction for alternative voting methods for the 2026 municipal election. On top of that, the committee had notes about a couple of projects and the current state of the single-use plastic ban. So, for the last time in 2023, let’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: The Accessibility Committee Lands on a Direction for 2026 Voting Methods”
This Week at Council: The Last Meeting… of 2023!
Perhaps a bit anticlimactically, the year at council came to end this week with two back-to-back meetings that laid out the progress on the City’s shift to a new customer service strategy, and the approval of several hundred new housing units. Also, Mayor Cam Guthrie gave out some medals, including one for a Guelph recipient of the Order of Ontario who’s pictured above. So how did 2023 end at council? Let’s recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: The Last Meeting… of 2023!”
