It’s still about a month before the budget process really gets underway, but there’s already a warning that things are going to be tricky for council if they have a hope of balancing all that they want to do while making it affordable of the people of Guelph. Bill 23 has dug us a deep hole and the crises of affordability and housing are making that hole even more difficult to fill, but is all hope lost? Perhaps there’s an answer in this council workshop… Continue reading “This Week at Council: The Crunchier Than Normal Budget Crunch”
POLICE NOTES: Reckless Driving, Stolen Perfume and Fake T-Swift Tix
There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days. MEETING PREVIEW: Transit Advisory Committee Meeting for October 19, 2023
This month’s Transit Advisory Committee meeting will be a brief one it seems. There’s only three topics on the agenda along with the usual general update from transit management including the status of the fleet’s four electric buses. Mostly, it seems like this meeting will be dealing with matters of feedback, so if you have a question or concern, reach out to a TAC member near you. In the meantime, here’s the agenda… Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Transit Advisory Committee Meeting for October 19, 2023”
MEETING PREVIEW: Accessibility Advisory Committee for October 17, 2023
It’s that time again for the Accessibility Advisory Committee, on schedule, almost exactly two months since the last one. For this October meeting, the AAC will talk about that special workshop that didn’t happen, new road designs, new playground designs, the accessible future of Guelph’s patios, and a special note about how the federal government undid a whole lot of good work on plastics. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on October 24?
Apparently, city council is taking Halloween off. The final meeting of October is a week early, but that fact probably hasn’t had too big of an impact on the list of items for this regular meeting of council because most of it is about what’s already been approved at Committee of the Whole earlier this month. At least one of those reports will be revisited, plus one of our local sports teams will stop by so that their championship can be celebrated. RECAP: Almost Everyone Walks Away Happy from Committee of Adjustment
Things went pretty smoothly at this month’s Committee of Adjustment meeting, and they usually do when staff recommends that almost half of the agenda be deferred. But there was some disagreement on that, and there were also some other disagreements about the direction offered by staff on some selection applications. So who walked away with all or most of what they wanted? You should find out in the recap of this month’s meeting… Continue reading “RECAP: Almost Everyone Walks Away Happy from Committee of Adjustment”

RECAP: Social Services Tries to Find a Way to Keep Sanguen Health Van Going
It’s not quite budget time yet, but there was a big budget ask at this month’s Social Services meeting at Wellington County. Staff members from the Sanguen Health Centre’s Community Health Van were special guests, and they are looking for support to keep that service going past March of next year. How the committee coped with that, and how they handled other social services business is the subject of the recap below… Continue reading “RECAP: Social Services Tries to Find a Way to Keep Sanguen Health Van Going”
GUELPH POLITICAST #392 – Caution’s Creek Part 1: The Past
This is one of those episodes that’s based on events that predate many of us that have come to call Guelph home in the last few decades. It’s also a story about land issues, and the desire to protect sensitive land from development. It’s had a lot of names over the years including the Kortright Waterfowl Park, the Niska Lands, and the Hanlon Creek Conservation Area, but the story around this property is just as complicated to sort out. Local Reactions Coming as Israel-Hamas War Intensifies
An attack against Israel’s southern district by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Saturday has lead to now four days of full-scale war in some of the worse violence seen in Israel and the occupied territories in years. Naturally, the repercussions are being felt here in Canada as members of both the Jewish and the Palestinian communities now share worry about family members in the Middle East as their seems to be no end in site for the crisis.
