City of Guelph Receives $100,000 for Tourism-Based Economic Recovery

There’s really no measurement for which industry has been hit the worst because of COVID-19, but not being able to leave your home the last couple of months has meant not only could you not go anywhere in town, but you really couldn’t go anywhere in anyone else’s town either. The Federal government is looking to do their part to help encourage tourism again as areas continue to re-open in the weeks to come, and Guelph is a recipient of some of that new funding. City Hires a New Chief Planner to Carry Out Heavy Agenda

The Chief Planner is a pretty big hole to fill in the roster of City Hall senior staff, especially when there’s so much planning to do, even in the midst of a global pandemic. School Board Endorses Police Presence Task Force Creation

A discussion held over from last week’s special meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was no less easier to resolve seven days later. At Tuesday evening’s virtual meeting of the Board, the creation of a new task force to look at police presence in schools was debated, and so was the first attempt by the Board to due outreach on the subject with a proposed town hall that’s now going to take place in September. The City of Guelph Sets Dates on Re-Opening Some Facilities

Earlier this week at the COVID-19 response meeting of city council, senior staff discussed the plans to start the re-opening of City facilities in the weeks to come. Police Board Follows Mayor’s Lead on Tackling Better Community Relations

Considering the moment, it’s understandable why a lot of eyes were on the Guelph Police Services Board meeting on Thursday. Upper Grand Board to Look at Police in Schools, Hung Up on Technicalities

At a special meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board on Tuesday night, trustees all agreed that while forming a task force to look at police presence in schools is a good idea, the motion tabled by the Board chair had some issues that couldn’t be resolved in one night. While the Board accepted the report, there’s still a lot of work to be done before they move onto the next phase. City of Guelph Offers Expanded Options for Patios and Curbside Pick-Up

Friday marked the beginning of Ontario’s Stage 2 economic re-opening in Guelph and other select areas. For area restaurants and bars that means being allowed to serve more than take-out, but only if they have a patio for people to dine al fresco. Because of that condition, and because not everyone has a patio ready to go, the City of Guelph wants to make it easier for people to dine outdoors and set up their ad hoc patios. Guelph Police Say They Followed the Letter with Tabbara Disclosure, Now Stop Asking

The news on June 5 that Kitchener-South Hespeler MP Marwan Tabbara had been arrested by the Guelph Police Service on April 10, and that no one in the general public knew about it for almost four months, has prompted a lot of questions. After being under pressure the last week, Guelph Police have now released a statement on why no one said that a sitting Member of Parliament had spent part of the Easter long weekend in their custody.
