Upper Grand School Board Votes to End School Resource Officer Program

The Upper Grand District School Board voted to discontinue its School Resource Officer (SRO) program at the board’s monthly meeting on Tuesday night. After nearly a year of work, the board enacted all the recommendations of the Police Presence in Schools Task Force, which effectively ends a program to have police officers regularly in schools, but maintains a relationship between schools and police. RECAP: Upper Grand Board Seeks Feedback on Police in Schools

Technical issues and technical challenges marked the long-awaited town hall on police presence in schools hosted by the Upper Grand District School Board. Participants were asked to give their feedback on a couple of questions as a community task force races to an end-of-year deadline to decide if having a police resource officer in school, in this year of tremendous social change, is something still worth doing. School Board Endorses Police Presence Task Force Creation

A discussion held over from last week’s special meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was no less easier to resolve seven days later. At Tuesday evening’s virtual meeting of the Board, the creation of a new task force to look at police presence in schools was debated, and so was the first attempt by the Board to due outreach on the subject with a proposed town hall that’s now going to take place in September.
