GUELPH POLITICAST #297 – Spread the Word, Err… Pollen

We’re picking up where we left off a couple of weeks ago with our countdown to Giving Tuesday, and we’re going to talk to a community group that’s focused on a very specific aspect of environmental protection. Guelph has its share of so-called “tree huggers”, but there’s only one group that’s trying to make this a better place for pollinating insects. GUELPH POLITICAST #296 – Still COVID with Dr. Mercer (Fall Edition)

We’re about halfway through fall, we’ve overcome the big hurdles like Back to School and Thanksgiving, and the new daily case count both in Guelph and across Ontario remains relatively steady. We’re still giving out vaccines, with a few thousand eligible people left to get their jabs, and then, a few weeks ago, we had our first case of the flu this year. What are we to make of all this? Let’s call a doctor! Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #296 – Still COVID with Dr. Mercer (Fall Edition)”

GUELPH POLITICAST #295 – Link the Watershed?

A group of transit workers and advocates have done the impossible, they’ve put on the table a regional transit plan that doesn’t involve Metrolinx, the Ministry of Transportation, or new private carriers. The need for regional connections is more pressing than ever since Greyhound stopped all Canadian service earlier this year, but is that finally about to change? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #295 – Link the Watershed?”

GUELPH POLITICAST #294 – Fighting Food Insecurity

Continuing our countdown to Giving Tuesday on November 30 we’re putting a spotlight on the North End Harvest Market, which fits nicely under the broad topic of food insecurity. There are many reasons why someone might be food insecure, but it’s fallen to many different small neighbourhood groups in our city to take direct action on it, especially during the pandemic. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #294 – Fighting Food Insecurity”

GUELPH POLITICAST #293 – What’s Going on at the Shelldale Family Gateway?

We just had Thanksgiving, but we’re now entering a whole season of giving including the November 30 commemoration of Giving Tuesday. That’s still about a month-and-a-half away, but for the next several weeks on this podcast we will highlight some of the organizations working locally to give back, and how you, as the generous person you are, might be able to help out. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #293 – What’s Going on at the Shelldale Family Gateway?”

GUELPH POLITICAST #292 – Saxon on Storm on Podcast

This year is the 30th season of the Guelph Storm, the local OHL hockey franchise who won the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 2019, and are technically still the undefeated champions of the Ontario Hockey League. But 18 months in this league is a life time, and as we enter the first OHL regular season play in over 18 months, we ask a Storm expert to talk about what it’s all going to look like. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #292 – Saxon on Storm on Podcast”

GUELPH POLITICAST #291 – On Trying to Do Better with Truth and Reconciliation

This year’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation comes on the coattails of a Federal Election, and before that almost weekly news about unmarked graves being discovered on the property of old residential schools. Like a lot of communities across Canada, Guelph promised to do better, and thousands came out to march to show their commitment. So how are we doing this September 30? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #291 – On Trying to Do Better with Truth and Reconciliation”

GUELPH POLITICAST #290 – Election Night in Guelph 2021!

It came and went, and now it’s over. The 2021 Federal Election belongs to the ages now, history was made with Canada’s pandemic election, and the decision of the Canadian people was that the government they elected in 2019 is the government they want to remain in charge, at least for now. All of this unfolded in four hours of completely unrehearsed radio madness on your campus and community radio station. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #290 – Election Night in Guelph 2021!”

GUELPH POLITICAST #289 – Guelph Business and the Pandemic: The Movie

At an event hosted by the Guelph Chamber of Commerce next week, a new documentary film project will be screened called Celebrating Guelph. It’s a love letter to the Royal City, it’s homegrown businesses, and their perseverance in the wake of the greatest financial and societal test since the Great Depression. This week, we go behind the scenes with the director. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #289 – Guelph Business and the Pandemic: The Movie”

GUELPH POLITICAST #288 – Human Trafficking: The Real Story

It was just a few weeks ago that the Joint Waterloo-Guelph Human Trafficking team, which is staffed by members of both police services, arrested a Guelph man for both both trafficking the victim, and assaulting them himself. It’s a good reminder that human trafficking happens in our backyard, and it’s not what pop culture and conspiracy theories make you think it is.
