This month’s Guelph Police Services Board starting with some tech issues. RECAP: Heritage Guelph Says ‘No’ to Kidd Barn Demo

It was a busy agenda with about half-a-dozen items, but that doesn’t mean that Heritage Guelph didn’t handle it all industriously. A handful of new designations are now on their way to council to get their seal of approval, but it was a past designation that will likely make the news. Ahead of next week’s council meeting on the very same subject, the heritage committee had their say about holding up a heritage property that the owner doesn’t seem to want to protect. Let’s recap…

RECAP: Board of Health Focuses on Innovation and STIs in May

The word of the month at the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Board of Health meeting was “innovation.” Many of the reports this month focused on how technological and digital tools are changing the way that public health, for want of a better term, does business, and that includes artificial intelligence. For some old school public health news, there was a report about sexual transmitted infections in the region last year. Let’s recap…! RECAP: Friends Ask the Library Board for Help, and Donor Recognition Discussed

The theme of April’s meeting of the Guelph Public Library Board of Directors was “help.” It makes sense because one of the many functions of the library is to give help to those who asked for it, and the Friends of the Guelph Public Library were asking because they need a space for their annual book sale this year. Also, in matters of helping themselves, the board moved forward with a project to show gratitude for people who give to the new library project. RECAP: Mayor’s Memo to Have Impact on Transit Plans for Fall, TAC Hears

By the end of the summer, 11 total EV buses will be on the road in Guelph. That was one of the revelations from this month’s Transit Advisory Committee. That was good news, and it was good news to hear that mobility services will soon be given a much needed review, but where there is good news, there must also be bad news. September service expansion will be delayed because of the mayor’s request for budget cuts. Let’s get into all the news with this month’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Mayor’s Memo to Have Impact on Transit Plans for Fall, TAC Hears”

RECAP: Accessibility Committee Plots Its Own Path for Election Options

After a timing forced delay back in February, the time was finally right for the final showdown between City of Guelph staff and the Accessibility Advisory Committee about voting options for the 2026 municipal election. Well, showdown was a bit strong, but so were the concerns that the AAC has about another election without internet voting. Now the matter is going to council next month, but for now there’s the recap of this month’s AAC meeting… Continue reading “RECAP: Accessibility Committee Plots Its Own Path for Election Options”

RECAP: Panel Hears Appeal of Latest Anti-Abortion Bus Ads

On Friday, it was a rare meeting of the Advertising Review Panel. At issue was a complaint by Guelph and Area Right to Life who want to buy a couple of new bus ads and the City of Guelph who did not want to sell them. The two parties met in the council chambers to hash out their differences, and then it was left in the hands of the panel to render a decision about whether the ads will be taken, or whether the bus will leave the station without them. Let’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Panel Hears Appeal of Latest Anti-Abortion Bus Ads”

RECAP: First Meeting of New Combined Social Services Committee Painted Bleak Future

It was an historical day at the Administrative Centre on Wednesday as members from Wellington County and Guelph councils sat down for the first Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Committee. RECAP: Ticks, Falls, and Vices All at Issue at April’s Board of Health Meeting

There’s a wide variety of interesting topics in the realm of the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Board of Health this April, which is a spring month. With spring here, there was a lot of talk about ticks and mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, but accident season is any season when it comes to the increasing rate of falls in our community. Also, there’s talk about Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer’s thoughts and an update about school suspensions.
