On Friday, it was a rare meeting of the Advertising Review Panel. At issue was a complaint by Guelph and Area Right to Life who want to buy a couple of new bus ads and the City of Guelph who did not want to sell them. The two parties met in the council chambers to hash out their differences, and then it was left in the hands of the panel to render a decision about whether the ads will be taken, or whether the bus will leave the station without them. Let’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Panel Hears Appeal of Latest Anti-Abortion Bus Ads”

RECAP: First Meeting of New Combined Social Services Committee Painted Bleak Future
It was an historical day at the Administrative Centre on Wednesday as members from Wellington County and Guelph councils sat down for the first Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Committee. Most of the meeting was in the realm of reviews, reviews of how all the key services work and reviews of projects in progress, but there were some flashing warning signs about the impact from using Strong Mayor Powers in the Royal City. Let’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: First Meeting of New Combined Social Services Committee Painted Bleak Future”
RECAP: Heritage Guelph Gets Ready for Designation Dump on Council
There were April showers at this month’s Heritage Guelph meeting, and it was showering perspective designations to city council in the near future. RECAP: Ticks, Falls, and Vices All at Issue at April’s Board of Health Meeting
There’s a wide variety of interesting topics in the realm of the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Board of Health this April, which is a spring month. With spring here, there was a lot of talk about ticks and mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, but accident season is any season when it comes to the increasing rate of falls in our community. Also, there’s talk about Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer’s thoughts and an update about school suspensions. RECAP: Consultants Lay Out a Plan to Promote the New Library for the Board
It was a good day for the Guelph Public Library, and not just because today was the day for the monthly Board of Directors meeting. After the announcement Monday morning that the new library project was getting some cash from the federal government, the board sat down to talk to a consultant about how they were going to sell it. Let’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Consultants Lay Out a Plan to Promote the New Library for the Board”

RECAP: Cobey Tells Police Board They’re Building to Meet New Challenges
This month’s meeting of the Guelph Police Services Board seemed a bit reactionary to recent events. You probably saw the news last week that police made a $5 million drug bust that also involved some illegal firearms, and it’s that second part that’s becoming more of a concern, and you will read why in the recap. In terms of good news, Chief Gord Cobey thinks that Guelph Police are rising to the occasion. Check out the recap for more below… Continue reading “RECAP: Cobey Tells Police Board They’re Building to Meet New Challenges”
RECAP: Social Services Committee Feels Good About Direction Post-Symposium
This month’s Social Services Committee meeting was a special occasion, not only was there a change in venue to a Wellington County building on Wyndham Street, but this was the last committee meeting in its present iteration. But before a new committee takes over, there was a lot for this group to tackle on the March agenda from ongoing construction projects to the aftermath of the Health and Housing Symposium. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Social Services Committee Feels Good About Direction Post-Symposium”
RECAP: Public Health Hears a Warning of Measles, and Cannabis Misinformation
March came in like a lion at the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Board of Health meeting, at least if you’re concerned about the return of measles to the infectious disease discourse. Dr. Nicola Mercer had some reassuring words about vaccinations and measles, and then there were some active discussions about TB and some important gaps in the community knowledge about the effect of cannabis use. Let’s dig into the recap of this month’s meeting… Continue reading “RECAP: Public Health Hears a Warning of Measles, and Cannabis Misinformation”
RECAP: Heritage Guelph Approves New Permits and New Designation
Sometimes there just isn’t a lot for Heritage Guelph to disagree on. It wasn’t a packed agenda to begin with, but it didn’t even take the committee an hour to hear the five items listed and render verdicts on all of them. There were a couple of heritage permits, a new heritage designation report, a new designation sent to council for final approval. Let’s look at the relatively brief recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Approves New Permits and New Designation”
