RECAP: Heritage Guelph Says ‘No’ to Kidd Barn Demo

It was a busy agenda with about half-a-dozen items, but that doesn’t mean that Heritage Guelph didn’t handle it all industriously. A handful of new designations are now on their way to council to get their seal of approval, but it was a past designation that will likely make the news. Ahead of next week’s council meeting on the very same subject, the heritage committee had their say about holding up a heritage property that the owner doesn’t seem to want to protect. Let’s recap…

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the May 14 Meeting?

This month’s planning meeting is all about heritage, or rather it’s all about getting rid of heritage. One of the two applications at least has the endorsement of staff, but if you’re concerned about the fate of an historic farmhouse and its accompanying barn in the south end, you might want to perk up because being told that they have to live with protecting that heritage on their land is not sitting well with the property owner. MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for May 6, 2024

There’s going to be a busy slate at this month’s Heritage Guelph meeting as the local heritage protection committee’s got a lot of extra protection to do. First up, they will asked again to put themselves between history and the wrecking ball as a property already under protection is threatened yet again. But other matters this month are less urgent or dire as the committee adds three more properties to the formal list of designated properties. This Week at Council: Planning, Tribunal and Encampments Form the Trifecta

There are busy weeks at council, and then there’s spending nearly half of a 28-hour period in the council chambers. That was the time frame this week at 1 Carden Street, and in that period there was a planning meeting, a meeting where council sat as tribunal on a matter of misapplied Development Charges, and, the big one, a marathon meeting about a Public Spaces Use bylaw. To see how it all turned out, consult this week’s recap below… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Planning, Tribunal and Encampments Form the Trifecta”

This Week at Council: Housing, Heritage and Hesitancy in Double Header

It’s tough to summarize a nine-hour council meeting, but it kind of helps that this one came in two parts. In the first half, council tried its best to use the limited tool kit they have to generate some housing solutions amidst the crisis, and then, in the second half, it was the usual monthly planning meeting with some big new applications, big decisions, and some big heritage designations. Here’s the (lengthier than normal) recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Housing, Heritage and Hesitancy in Double Header”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the October 17 Planning Meeting?
