There was a lot going on at the Board of Health for this month’s meeting, but the thing probably everyone came to hear about was this question: What the heck is going on with measles? Although there was a lot of discussion about various Public Health programs, what you probably heard about from this meeting is the news that the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph region is now an at-risk area for measles transmission. Let’s get into it! Continue reading “RECAP: Board of Health Hears Area is Now Risk Area for Measles”

GUELPH POLITICAST #469 – Whatever Happened to “Sunny Ways”? (feat. Mustafa Zuberi)
The recent federal election was the formal turning of the page from the premiership of Justin Trudeau to the one led by Mark Carney. For long-time political observers, the difference between the two men in both style and substance is stark, but there’s no doubt that the change in leadership in March is at least half the reason the Liberals got a near majority last week. And yet, the question remains: What happened to Trudeau-mania? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #469 – Whatever Happened to “Sunny Ways”? (feat. Mustafa Zuberi)”

POLICE NOTES: Hit and Run Payoff, Storage Rooms Raided, and a Polite Thief
There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the May 13, 2025 Meeting?
The planning meeting this month of May will focus on three very different and specific things. First, council will consider yet another appeal of another heritage designation. Then, unlike last month, council will mull over a potential new development. And finally, council will look at some updates to a bylaw that tells you where the signs can all go. Will there be fireworks before Victoria Day? I guess we’ll see. Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the May 13, 2025 Meeting?”

RECAP: Heritage Guelph Approves Two Demos and Nine Designations
Heritage Guelph’s May meeting was fairly brisk, which is interesting because of all the work that ended up getting done. Members of the committee approved almost 10 new designations (one didn’t make the cut… for now), approved – regretfully – two removals from the registry, and heard about a massive project to upgrade road infrastructure in an older part of town. Let’s get into the detail with this month’s Heritage Guelph recap! Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Approves Two Demos and Nine Designations”
GUELPH POLITICAST #468 – The Slow March to 169 (feat. The CFRU News Team)
By the time you’re listening to this you know how it all turned out: Carney’s the PM, a plurality of voters went Conservative though not enough in Carleton to send the leader back to the House. The NDP are decimated, the Greens are down to one seat again, and the Bloc have called a truce in the name of “national unity”(?). What an election! Let’s live through it all again!! This Week at Council: Taxi Questions and More Tree Talk
Just when you thought that the debate about the Private Tree Bylaw was over, it’s not! Although there was a lot of discussion about that at Committee of the Whole earlier this month, some haggling about how big a tree needs to be to save it, there was some attempted re-calibration this week. In other news, council discussed a matter that forced them to reckon with the divide between city hall and Guelph’s disabled community. Here’s the recap! Continue reading “This Week at Council: Taxi Questions and More Tree Talk”
