It was an action-packed week at council, but it was also one of the most contentious weeks seen in the chambers in the last few months. The friction was all about exploring online voting methods for the 2026 municipal election, and whether or not council would proceed with the option reached at Committee of the Whole. Also, there was another question about whether or not too much was collected in development charges. Continue reading “This Week at Council: Internet Voting Remains an Option”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the May 29 Meeting?
Another meeting of city council where city council isn’t being city council. In another instance where our favourite local government has to exercise their semi-legal powers to hear a case of accidentally assigned development charges, did the developer pay too much and whose fuzzy math is the fuzziest? Council will be the ultimate arbitrator in another edition of The Price is Right, Guelph real estate division!

RECAP: Accessibility Committee Plots Its Own Path for Election Options
After a timing forced delay back in February, the time was finally right for the final showdown between City of Guelph staff and the Accessibility Advisory Committee about voting options for the 2026 municipal election. Well, showdown was a bit strong, but so were the concerns that the AAC has about another election without internet voting. Now the matter is going to council next month, but for now there’s the recap of this month’s AAC meeting… Continue reading “RECAP: Accessibility Committee Plots Its Own Path for Election Options”
MEETING PREVIEW: Accessibility Advisory Committee for April 16, 2024
After skipping March like usual, the Accessibility Advisory Committee will pick up where it left off in February, with questions about the direction on alternative voting methods for the 2026 municipal election. That’s going to be complicated, but fortunately much of the rest of the agenda seems straightforward with some items on heritage, waste collection and transit to consider, and then we have to get ready for a special meeting in May. This Week at Council: Planning, Tribunal and Encampments Form the Trifecta
There are busy weeks at council, and then there’s spending nearly half of a 28-hour period in the council chambers. That was the time frame this week at 1 Carden Street, and in that period there was a planning meeting, a meeting where council sat as tribunal on a matter of misapplied Development Charges, and, the big one, a marathon meeting about a Public Spaces Use bylaw. To see how it all turned out, consult this week’s recap below… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Planning, Tribunal and Encampments Form the Trifecta”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on February 21?
Originally, the content of this meeting was supposed to be tackled in September, which would have made it ideally timed about a little more than a week before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Slightly less well-timed, but no less important, council will finally get together to consider matters of Indigenous reconciliation and their place in it with a very insightful and informative exercise. Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on February 21?”
City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Second February 14 Meeting?
Here’s something interesting! In what looks to be a very busy week and month for city council, it’s a chance for them to sit as a tribunal to hear a complaint, in this case a complaint concerning a development charge. Council will hear the complaint, hear the response, and then hear the counter-response from both sides before rendering a decision. It’s all the fun of a civil trial live from the council chambers!! Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Second February 14 Meeting?”
City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on September 20?
In September we count down to the end of the month and the newest national holiday, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On September 30, we’re meant to stop and think about the impacts of five centuries of colonialism on Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Metis people, and take steps to make a better future we all share equally. Council is getting a early start with a highly educational workshop meeting. Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on September 20?”
